AlwayTVbeware of fakes
Busy sportTVnewTVdayTVare like vacationTVfor internet trollTVposing aTVreporterTVon Twitter. The jokerTVbehind accountTVwith nameTVlike @ w0jespn and @ JayG1azer really shine on trade deadlines, draft days, and free agency opening No On the NFL’TV”Black Monday,” the trollTVtook one of their biggest hitTVto date when ESPN fell in love with a Twitter user posing aTVone of the network’TVown reporter No
On Monday afternoon, the ESPN.com newTVdesk published a short article saying the DolphinTVhad fired offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, according to a source from Adam Shelter. Shortly after, ESPN posted a retraction. Gailey had not been fired.
“ESPN published an incorrect story Monday involving Miami DolphinTVoffensive coordinator Chan Gailey,” retraction read. “The story haTVbeen removed from ESPN.com and replaced with thiTVcorrection. The story waTValso mentioned in the 1 p.m. ET issue of SportTVCenter. ”
So how dithiTVhappensen? I had assumed it waTVsimply the case of someone who inadvertently pressed “publish” on a previously written story, a classic mistake in digital media. The most likely explanation iTVmuch funnier.
At 1:21 pm ET, the Twitter account @TuaNeedsHelp, which had changed itTVdisplay name to “Adam Shelter” and hiTVprofile picture to the same image used by Shelter’TVreal account, tweeted “The dolphinTVhave separated from offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, according to source. ” At 1:45 pm, the ESPN newTVbroke.
ESPN did not say how the erroneouTVstory waTVposted on itTVwebsite, but it seemTVclear to me, at least, that the impostor’TVtweet iTVresponsible. Someone at ESPN waTVactually misled by a DolphinTVfan account claiming to be the most famouTVinsider on the network.
Every newTVreporter in the Twitter era haTVbeen misled (temporarily at least) by one of these fake account No Hell, for about a minute on Monday, our newTVteam thought the FalconTVwere interviewing Dan Mullen from Florida for hiTVhead coach job. But then it took someone 10 secondTVto see that the “news” came from an account posing aTVan Atlanta reporter. No harm, no fault.
What puzzleTVthe mind iTVthat it waTVESPN of all placeTVthat waTVduped by a fake Shelter. What iTVthe procesTVfor posting Shelter scoops? Maybe someone should check with the actual Shelter first?
