Europa League draw Round of 16 date, time, teams, TV & stream as matches and schedule are set

The field of 16 teams left standing in the 2022 Europa League is nearly set following the conclusion of the special playoff round.

The two-leg playoffs that were held on Feb. 17 and Feb. 24 determined the final eight teams to join the eight Europa League group winners in the Round of 16.

The Round of 16 and the subsequent rounds — quarterfinals and semifinals — will each be played over two legs with the team that scores the most goals over both matches advancing to the next round. The two teams left standing after the semifinals will meet in the 2022 Europa League final on May 18 in Seville, Spain.

The only difference in the Europa League knockout stages this year is that there is no away goals tiebreaker in case teams are even on aggregate goals scored at the end of the second match. UEFA abolished the away goals rule in June 2021. Extra time and, if necessary, a penalty-kick shootout will determine the winner in case teams are level on goals after 180 minutes.

How does the Europa League draw work?

The Europa League group winners will be seeded. They will be drawn against the winners of the playoff round, which saw the teams that came second in their Europa League groups face the teams that finished third in the Champions League groups.

The eight Europa League group-stage winners will get to play the second leg at home, which is perceived as an advantage since a potential extra time period or penalty-kick shootout would be played on home turf.

It’s also worth remembering clubs from the same country cannot be drawn against each other at this stage. This restriction is removed from the quarterfinals forward.

There are three teams from Spain (Barcelona, Real Betis and Sevilla) and three from Germany (Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig). Sevilla is dreaming of advancing to the final which happens to be hosted on its home turf.
