Expert Tips, Hints, and Picks from the Week 7 NFL Survivor Group

We’ve only had one week of massive carnage in NFL survivor groups yet, which always makes it seem like another is just around the corner. Heading into week 7, there is one hugely popular Survivor pick and three other notably popular picks. If Houston upsets Arizona, about half of the group’s entries will be eliminated, so you have to wonder if picking the Cardinals is the right thing to do. Below, the experts at TeamRankings discuss current winning odds, expected future values, and more strategy factors to help you with your NFL Week 7 survivor pool picks.

NFL Week 7 Survivor Group Tips – Tips, Team Strategy

Note: The “Choose Popularity” numbers below refer to the estimated percentage of entries from the nationwide survivor group who have already chosen the team in question. Those numbers, as well as the odds of a team winning, can change throughout the week, so be sure to check out our NFL survivor chooses product for all the latest data and selection advice tailored to your group.

GREAT NEWS: Before we get to the selections, we are happy to announce that we have just published our first e-book, Survivor group strategy: what it takes to win. It explains all the key elements of the survivor group strategy and includes case studies on specific historical weeks and winning group entries. It’s free right now so download your copy here.

Arizona Cardinals vs. Houston Texans

Choose popularity: 48% (most popular survivor pick)
Point difference: -17.5

Do you think JJ Watt is happy to be out of Houston? The Cardinals play their former team and are favored by more than 17 points with odds of winning more than 90 percent on this one. Arizona has decent future value, and its popularity limits its expected value to some extent this week. However, the value drop of the Cardinals, Rams, Bucs to the next level is huge.

Wearing Arizona this week means he can continue to save the Rams and Bucs, who have even more weeks to go in which they project to be big favorites with little popularity.

Green Bay Packers vs. Washington Soccer Team

Choose popularity: 17%
Point difference: -9.0

In a normal week, Green Bay would be a solid play. This is not a normal week. Generally, you don’t want to go too high on the second most popular pick when it’s not a top favorite of the week. The Packers’ advantage is limited because the favorites above them have a better chance of winning and two of them have little popularity.

If you’re in a group that will eventually require you to pick a lot of teams, using the Packers might make some sense, as they would allow you to save the other top picks for later in the season.

New England Patriots vs. New York Jets

Choose popularity: 13%
Point difference: -7.5

Like Green Bay, New England would be a solid play in a normal week. However, the Pats have a lower expected value this week because the favorites are more likely to win.

The Patriots’ case comes down entirely to future value savings in large groups expected to go the distance. I would switch the risk this week to use a team that projects to have just one other potential spot, in Week 17 against Jacksonville, where it is useful in groups of survivors.

Los Angeles Rams vs. Detroit Lions

Choose popularity: eleven%
Point difference: -15.0

More than half of the tickets in a typical group have already used the Rams, limiting how many can use them now. They are a high value pick if you still have them available and can afford to spend them at the Jared Goff / Matthew Stafford Trading Places Bowl.

However, they have other weeks in the future that could be valuable as well. If you are a subscriber, you can check the Seasonal view of our data grid and see who else we project who will be useful in, say, Week 13, when the Rams play the Jaguars at home.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Chicago Bears

Choose popularity: 4%
Point difference: -13.0

What we just said about the Rams also applies to Tampa Bay. More than half of a typical group have already used Bucs, and they are a great value game.

They are the second most valuable gear to survive, so using them now is acceptable, but being able to keep them for the future will also continue to provide value and versatility.
