Extremadura attends the meeting of the Coalition of European Agrarian Regions

The Minister of Agriculture meets to agree on a roadmap that determines the future of this informal network of regions for the period 2022-2024

The Minister of Agriculture of the Junta de Extremadura, Begoña García, has participated this Friday in Brussels in a high-level meeting of the Coalition of European Agricultural Regions (AGRIRegions), which was attended by regional managers of agriculture from 11 European regions to agree on a roadmap that determines the future of this informal network of regions for the period 2022-2024.

In this framework, regional political leaders have also had the opportunity to debate with a high representative of the Directorate General for Agriculture of the European Commission and with several MEPs.

Following the coalition’s success in championing the regions vision in the new CAP, this network of regions now aspires to develop the territorial approach in all EU policies related to the transition of food and agricultural systems and in become the European forum of regions “of reference for food and agricultural policies”, the Board reported in a press release.

These aspirations will crystallize in the elaboration of a document that expresses a common vision for the future of the EU food system from a regional perspective and a shared approach on how to achieve it.

The counselor has been accompanied by the general director of Common Agricultural Policy, Javier Gonzalo. In addition to contributing Extremadura’s vision to this new coalition roadmap, other topics of regional interest were discussed with representatives of the European institutions, such as the effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the agricultural sector or the drought in the Iberian Peninsula.

During the high-level meeting, Begoña García had the opportunity to exchange views with Wolfgang Burtscher, Director General for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission, and with several MEPs from the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Parliament, including that was the Spanish Clara Aguilera.

This participation in a high-level meeting, organized by the Coalition of European Agricultural Regions, took place within the framework of a three-day visit to Brussels by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, Population and Territory, in which García Bernal also He has chaired the College of Producers’ Representatives of AREPO, met with the cabinet of the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, and chaired the General Assembly of AREPO, which Extremadura chairs.

The Coalition of European Agricultural Regions is the voice of the mobilized European regions. The Coalition represents 17 regions, among the most important in the EU from an agricultural point of view, from 7 different Member States: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Andalusia, Azores, Bolzano-Alto Adige, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Brittany, Castilla y León, Emilia-Romagna, Extremadura, Lombardy, Normandy, New Aquitaine, Pays de la Loire, Sibiu, Toscana and Wielkopolska.
