Extremadura, covered in dust by the haze

Forecast of the Aemet

Maria Fernandez

Calima in Extremadura. The Celia storm has brought suspended dust to Extremadura from the Sahara desert. The flow of winds generated between the Peninsula and the African continent has proven the arrival of a large cloud with particles of dust, sand and ash that has dyed the skies of the region an orange color, with greater or lesser intensity depending on the place.

The entry of suspended dust will continue in the coming days and will lead to mud showers and a worsening of air quality.

This Tuesday there will be a new rainy day in Extremadura, although not as intense as yesterday. Cloudy skies with precipitation and showers are expected in the region. In the southern third, they will be occasionally strong and with storms, while to the north they will be less likely and more scattered. The Aemet also forecasts fog banks in the southwest mountains and easterly winds for this Tuesday.

In the forecast of the Aemet (State Meteorological Agency), the province of Badajoz has a probability of rain that ranges between 10 and 45 percent in the morning; from noon to midnight, the probability rises to 60% while in the south of the province of Cáceres the possibility of rainfall between 5 and 15 percent is contemplated. In the afternoon, in addition, the sky will tend to cloudy intervals, with medium cloudiness predominating.

The snow level is between 1,900 and 2,000 meters. The minimum temperatures will not experience changes (they will be between 6 and 11) and the maximum will go up considerably and will reach 23 degrees in Plasencia, 22 in Trujillo, 21 in Navalmoral de la Mata and Cáceres and 20 in cities like Badajoz and Mérida.

This past morning, the rainiest municipalities have been Fregenal de la Sierra (2 liters per square meter), Zafra (1.6) and Jerez de los Caballeros (1.2). In recent days there has been widespread rainfall that has left abundant water in Extremadura, especially in the north of Cáceres, where towns such as Garganta la Olla and Piornal have collected from last Friday until yesterday, Monday, more than 80 liters per square meter. Only on Saturday the 12th, the Garganta la Olla station collected 42.4 liters per square meter. In some counties, the accumulated precipitation is already above the average for the month of March and in the rest it is already close to that value.

The minimums will be slightly rising (they will be between 7 and 12 degrees) and the maximums will not experience changes (they will oscillate between 19 and 23 degrees).
