Facebook announced this Thursday that from now on its corporate name is Meta, as part of an image renewal process.
The Mark Zuckerberg-led company said the new name “encompasses” what it does better as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas such as virtual reality.
The change does not apply to their individual platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, only to the parent company of which they are a part.
The decision comes after a series of negative news about Facebook, based on documents leaked by former employee Frances Haugen, who accused the company of “putting profit above safety.”
In 2015, Google restructured its business and called the parent company Alphabet, a name that has not caught on with the general public.
Zuckerberg announced the new name while unveiling plans to build a “metaverso”– An online world where people can play, work and communicate in a virtual environment, often using virtual reality headsets.
In his view, the existing brand could not “possibly represent everything that we are doing today, much less in the future”, and needed to change. “Over time, I hope that we will be seen as a meta-reverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity in what we are building, “he said in a virtual conference. According to him, they now saw his company” as two different segments, “one for their applications and the other for their work on future platforms.” And as part of this, it is Time for us to embrace a new company brand that encompasses everything we do to reflect who we are and what we hope to build, “he added.
The company also unveiled a new sign at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, which replaces its thumb-up “Like” logo with a blue infinite shape.
Zuckerberg said the new name reflects that over time, users will not need to use Facebook to use the company’s other services.
To an outsider, a metaverse may look like a version of virtual reality, but some people believe it could be the future of the internet. Instead of being on a computer, people in a metaverse can use a headset to enter a virtual world that connects all kinds of digital environments.
The virtual world is expected to be usable for virtually anything from work, play, and concerts, to socializing with friends and family. Facebook said in a post that it intends to begin trading its shares under the new one. ticker symbol MVRS as of December 1.
The company has been at the focus of numerous scandals in recent times.
On Thursday, The Washington Post reported that Facebook withheld important information about mispositions about vaccines during the pandemic, the latest in a series of stories based on internal documents leaked by Haugen to the media.
Among other things, reports note that Facebook ignored an investigation that showed Instagram harmed teenagers’ mental health and failed to remove hate speech from its platforms outside the U.S. Zuckerburg has described the reports as a “coordinated effort. to selectively use leaked documents to paint a false image of our company. “
