Family of 4, police officer, injured in Oxford house fire


Five people, including a police officer, were injured early Friday in a house fire in Oxford, Massachusetts.Four family members were in the home at 45 Leicester St. when the fire broke out at 12:45 a.m.”Police officers were first on scene and found a condition where there was fire from all four sides of the building and occupants were attempting to get out,” Oxford Fire Chief Laurent McDonald said.A woman and two teenage children smelled smoke and were able to get out of the burning home. “The mother and one teenager made it out through the main floor. The other teenager was in the basement and made it out through the bulkhead,” McDonald said.A man in his 30s who was trapped in the home jumped from the second floor of the residence.”(He) suffered second- and third-degree burns over approximately 70% of his body and possibly a broken leg jumping from the window,” McDonald said.A police officer who arrived at the scene was injured while trying to pull the man away from the burning home.The police officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. “Usually people are sleeping. If somebody didn’t wake them up we would have had fatalities here,” McDonald said. “The fire was heavily advanced by the time the crews arrived.” The fire grew to three alarms and destroyed the home, officials said. “It was just fully engulfed,” neighbor Brian Holbrook said. “That house was just totally in flames.”The cause of the fire is under investigation.
