Fantasy Injury Updates: Latest News on Austin Ekeler, Terry McLaurin, Kareem Hunt, More Affecting Week 15 Waiver Collections

Austin Ekeler, Terry McLaurin, Kareem Hunt, Emmanuel Sanders and Rex Burkhead all left early for Sunday’s games. They present varying degrees of importance in the world of fantasy football, but with the playoffs scheduled to begin in Week 15, all of their statuses will affect waiver lead collection and kick-off decisions. We have the latest injury updates for each player below.

WEEK 15: Collection of exemptions

Austin Ekeler injury update

Ekeler (ankle) was eliminated from the game in the second half against the GiantsBut it is unclear what the severity of his injury is at this time of week. It has been speculated that he sprained his ankle on the upper side, which probably kept him away for several weeks. With the Chargers set to play the Chiefs on Thursday, we will have to watch this situation very closely. If Ekeler is out for any length of time, Justin Jackson and Joshua Kelley will likely part ways like they did Sunday. We give Jackson a slight nod due to his superior reception skills, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see either of us receive more touches. In deep leagues, you might even want to take a flier on rookie Larry Rountree III.

For now, we do not have Ekeler in our classification due to the rapid change. Jackson is rated RB29 in standard and RB25 in the PPR leagues. Simply put, it’s a must-start if Ekeler is out. Kelley could have a flexible appeal, and we see it as a high-end RB3.

Terry McLaurin injury update

After suffering a concussion against the Cowboys, McLaurin will have to pass the league’s concussion protocol in order to play the Eagles this week. We’ve seen a lot of guys don the suit just one week after a head injury, but we’ve also seen players miss at least one game. With that said, we’ll have to keep our eyes and ears tuned for their updates later in the week.

The Eagles have the No. 2 defense against fantasy WRs, but since McLaurin is pretty much the only solid pass receiver for Washington, we rank him WR16 in both the standard and PPR leagues. If he’s out, Adam Humphries, DeAndre Carter, Curtis Samuel and Ricky Seals-Jones should see more targets, but it’s hard to know who will be the most desirable WR to start. Since we are in the fantasy playoffs, Seals-Jones is the player we would consider.

Kareem Hunt injury update

Hunt (knee) could have returned to the game against the Ravens if necessary, according to Kevin Stefanski, so that’s obviously a good sign for his Week 15 status against Green Bay. Of course, that doesn’t mean you’re definitely ready to play, as injuries can get worse during the week. If he loses more time, D’Ernest Johnson would serve as Nick Chubb’s best backup, but as we’ve seen this year when Hunt is out, Johnson generally doesn’t get enough touches to help out in fantasy leagues.

Green Bay is a top 12 unit against fantasy RBs, so if Hunt plays, look at him as a low-end RB2 or a flexible option that is more attractive in the PPR leagues. If you’re out, expect Nick Chubb to get an even bigger workload, but it’s already a must-start.

Emmanuel Sanders injury update

Sanders (knee) He was quickly ruled out after leaving the game against the Buccaneers in the first half., so his condition should be monitored later in the week in the face of a confrontation with Carolina. If it’s okay for Week 15, it’s a flexible low-end option in a tough showdown. If he’s out, Gabriel Davis will take his place on the Bills’ offense and rank in a similar spot.

Ultimately, Davis will attract initial consideration in the tough matchup, but it will be a pure boom or bust play.

Rex Burkhead injury update

Burkhead (groin) got hit against the Seahawks, leaving Royce Freeman as the only available running back for the Texans in the second half. We don’t know the severity of Burkhead’s injury, but given that David Johnson (reserve / COVID) could miss another game, Freeman is a valuable addition to his resignation this week. We understand that if you refuse to take a chance on a Texans RB, but he will face the Jags in Week 15, so look at him as a RB3 if Burkhead Y Johnson has to miss week 15.

Ultimately, it’s hard to know what the split would be if all three guys were active, so you may want to avoid this backfield entirely if you can avoid it.
