Is Jameis Winston starting week 1?

The godfather of the NFL breaking news, Adam Schefter, reported Friday Winston won the QB battle with Taysom Hill and will start Week 1 for Sean Payton. After an impressive preseason, Winston ran away with the job, as many of us expected.

While he trades Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Tampa’s other talented receivers in 2019 for Marquez Callaway, Tre’Quan Smith and (eventually) Michael Thomas this year, his lead is undeniable. In ’19, he was the QB3 in fantasy football despite throwing 30 interceptions. He won’t see the ridiculous passing volume like he did in Tampa that year, but he still screams courage if you can recruit him at an appropriate spot. He is currently worth a 12th round in standard leagues on our top 200 cheat sheet.

Winston is our 18th quarterback, but we recognize that he might as well top that spot. Of course, with Hill still around, Winston might as well have a short leash.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire / Darrel Williams injury update

CEH and Williams suffered injuries in Cheifs Week 2’s game of the season. CEH (ankle sprain) has limited work in practice, and Andy Reid said it’s safe to assume it will be ready by week 1. Williams (concussion) also participates in the practice with some limitations. He’s also expected to be ready for Week 1. With CEH, injuries continue to pile up early in his career. If you are someone who tends to be conservative about injuries, it may be high on your “do not recruit” list.

Edwards-Helaire is our No. 11 standard RB and our No. 9 PPR RB. Darrel Williams is among one of the best handcuffed RBs. If they both stay out, Darwin Thompson and Jerick McKinnon would see RB touches for the Chiefs.

Raheem Mostert injury update

Mostert left Wednesday’s practice with what he was described as back pain. The fantasy of Mostert wasting time would be significant, but he went back to practicing the next day. It’s hard to consider him more than a low-end RB2 on draft day, but he’ll have big splashes some weeks like every season. That makes it an ideal RB3 or RB4.

Mostert is our RB28 in standard and RB31 in PPR, but most fancy owners seem to be more interested in newbie Trey Sermon wives. The sermon is being written about a round after Mostert in most fancy drafts, according to FantasyPros ADP.
