The congress of European People’s Partywhich is being held in Rotterdam and in which Manfred Weber is elected as the new president, has been the perfect occasion for the official presentation of Alberto Nunez Feijoo before his colleagues who share political acronyms. In his first European summit, Feijóo has been one of the great novelties and all eyes were on him, due to the possibility that an alternation could take place in Spain within a reasonable period of time. The president of the PP has filled his agenda with bilateral meetings with other European leaders, reaching a dozen, but he wanted his first meeting to have a special meaning. It has not been with the representative of any country of the European Union, but with the Prime Minister of Moroccowho attended the summit as a guest because of his good relationship with the initials of the Popular Party.

The meeting between Feijóo and Aziz Ajanuch, the former Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries of his country, was arranged on Monday afternoon, at the proposal of Morocco, and took place this Monday morning, lasting half an hour. It was the first of all that both have maintained during the congress, which gives an idea of the relevance and meaning it had for both parties. At the meeting, the Moroccan prime minister invited Feijóo to visit his country this year, and the PP leader confirmed that he would look for the best date on his agenda.

Feijóo’s commitment: “I will never cheat Morocco and I will never cheat my country”

Before the bilateral with Morocco, Feijóo has advanced this Tuesday before the media the message that he wanted to transmit to the prime minister. “It is believed that the Moroccan government is very interested in knowing our position,” he explained. «The prime minister is a good friend of Spain and he knows very well that the PP is a reliable party». Feijóo insisted on the idea that the Government of Spain will be reliable and loyal with the PP: «The first thing I want to convey to you is that we are going to make a reliable foreign policy with Moroccowe are not going to deceive you, we are never going to be disloyal to that country and we are going to try to rebuild a foreign policy based on trust and parliamentary consensus in Spain, so that it has a vocation for permanence».

«Our alliance with Morocco is unquestionable. We are never going to be disloyal to this country, we are not going to do acts that break trust, we are not going to send letters without the knowledge of the Cortes Generales,” said Feijóo, who recalled that he has not yet received any explanation from Pedro Sánchez on his new position, unilateral and without consensus, regarding the Sahara, which became known through an official statement from Rabat, in which a letter from the President of the Government sent to the King was cited Mohammed VI. For this reason, he ironically pointed out that perhaps the Prime Minister of Morocco could explain to him what the new foreign policy of Spain is.

UN Resolutions

That yes, Feijóo has not wanted to fix in an unequivocal and blunt way the position of the PP on the Sahara. He has merely pointed out that “within the scope of UN resolutions” “many things” can be agreed upon and it can be stressed that it will be a foreign policy based on consensus, and with a vocation for permanence. With a premise that he wanted to emphasize: «I will never cheat Morocco, and I will never cheat my country».

Other bilateral talks with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzolathe president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, and EPP family leaders from Bulgaria, Germany, France, Poland, Romania, Greece, Sweden and Croatia. And also with Alexander Dobrindt, CSU deputy in the Bundestag.

In his ‘social’ presentation to his European colleagues, Feijóo had a very clear first perception: he could see a general concern about the Government “weak” that has Spainas reported to the media.

“We have perceived concern of European leaders because of the weak government that we have in the country”, acknowledged Feijóo, who has warned that Spain’s is an unprecedented government in the entire European Union, due to the weight of a left populist party, the relevance of the Communist Party and the influence of the independentistas in the president’s decisions. “Our colleagues do not understand how you can have as allies in the Government enemies of the nation, who want to destroy it,” explained the president of the PP.

Faced with this weakness, Feijóo maintains that Spain “is much stronger” than its government at this time, and the PP “is prepared to present an alternative». The leader of the opposition has also defended that the Spanish PP “is perhaps the most important in Europe with the German” and therefore has a specific responsibility. “We are called to assume a great responsibility: the economic reconstruction of the country, but also institutional and territorial, from moderation, political pragmatism and pro-European principles».
