Five dead in the third attack in Israel in a week

  • The other two attacks have been claimed by the Islamic State and carried out by Israeli citizens of the country’s Palestinian minority

Another bloody day Israel in its most violent week in the last 15 years. After two terrorist attacks claimed by Islamic State on Tuesday and Sunday, a man has opened fire on passers-by in a ultra-orthodox neighborhood from a city near Tel Aviv and has killed five people. One of the participants in the attack, Dia Hamarsheh, 26, has been shot dead by Israeli security forces. “Israel is facing a deadly wave of arab terrorism”, declared the prime minister, Naftali Bennett.

“We will fight terror with perseverance, stubbornness and iron hand; they will not move us from here, we will win”, he added. The events of the last week in Israel are reminiscent of the days of the second intifada two decades ago, when violence took over Israeli streets, squares and buses. But in this case, the threat comes from within. Last Tuesday, the city of Beersheba saw the death of four of its inhabitants for a knife attack and run over. This Sunday two 19-year-old police officers were shot dead by two attackers. On both occasions, those who wielded the weapons were Israeli citizens who were part of the country’s Palestinian minority, which accounts for 20%. The attacks were claimed by Islamic State.

The motives for the assault on Tuesday are unknown. On Bnei Brakon the outskirts of Tel Aviv, a man on a motorcycle with a M-16 rifle has started shooting. Four bystanders have died instantly and a fifth victim, a police officer, has succumbed to his injuries in hospital. A person has been arrested at the same scene of the attack and is being investigated as suspected of helping the author of the shooting. Another suspect has been arrested later.

The attacker is a 27-year-old Palestinian originally from Yabed, north of the occupied West Bank. He had served a six-month prison sentence after a conviction for terrorist links and illegal sale of weapons. Furthermore, he was an illegal construction worker in that same ultra-Orthodox neighborhood. It is very common that in the face of a lack of work in a West Bank mired in economic crisis, young Palestinian men work in the construction of illegal settlements in occupied territory or even on the other side of the separation wall.

The tension has not left the scene of the crime where dozens of ultra-Orthodox Jews have gathered shouting “death to the arabs” and “revenge”. Without claiming responsibility for the attack, Palestinian terrorist groups have praised the actions that occurred in Bnei Brak. “The Tel Aviv operation emphasizes the village unit Palestinian wherever he lives,” said the Hamas official, Mushir al-Masri, to a radio station affiliated with the militia. Ahmad al Mudalil, a senior representative of the Islamic Jihadhas celebrated the attack as “the harbinger of the operations of our people to penetrate deep into the entity [sionista]”.

For its part, the Israeli media laments the total 11 victims of terror in one week. This is the highest number since 2006 when a suicide bombing on a bus killed 11 Israelis in Tel Aviv. This week’s tragic record number adds up to more deaths than the years 2020 and 2021 combined. Defense Minister, Benny Gantzhas announced that all law enforcement authorities “will work using all means to restore safety to Israel’s streets and a sense of security for citizens.”
