Flurona: which countries have detected cases of Covid and flu infection?

After its detection this Sunday, Israel has focused on fluron, the co-infection by SARS-CoV-2 and the influenza virus. The Petah Tikv Beilinson Hospital was the first to notify and point out to the media the case detected in a 30-year-old woman who had just given birth. The patient did not have the flu or coronavirus vaccine.

Many studies assure that this is not the first case -since this double infection appeared in the United States and China in 2020-, but more and more countries are confirming cases of flurone within its borders.

Although there are still doubts about whether the combination of these two viruses in the same patient could generate a more serious infection, what we do know is that flurone has the attention of all experts just one week after the start of the seasonal flu epidemic in Europe.

Where has fluron been detected?

The news has gone around the world and there are already several countries that have confirmed the first cases of this double infection. Israel is now joined by Spain, with the detection of cases in the region of Catalonia, Hungary and Brazil.

Catalonia asks for calm before flurona

Less than 24 hours after the news was known in Israel, the Catalan Ministry of Health confirmed several cases in the region. At a press conference, the director of the Catalan Health Service, Gemma Craywinckel, assured that the cases detected are “few and anecdotal”.

In addition, he called for calm noting that “They are not particularly serious or different in approach”. At the moment, the patients in whom it has been detected present a mild condition, the Health Director confirmed that co-infection can occur on occasions when there are several circulating viruses that coexist, but that do not imply a greater “severity or complexity”.

Hungary detects omicron and flu coinfection

Unlike other countries where the coinfection detected was flu and the delta variant of Covid, in Hungary, the Neumann Labs chain of laboratories has been able to confirm cases of omicron and flu.

Its general director, Miklós Nyíri, assured the Hungarian media that in the last ten days two people have tested positive for both viruses at the same time. These are two young people living in Budapest who contracted the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Brazil confirms cases of flurone in America

Brazilian authorities have detected cases of flurone, thus becoming the first country in America to report this type of double contagion. According to the newspaper Folha de São Paulo,a total of three cases have been confirmed in the city of Fortaleza, located in the Ceará region.

The patients are two one-year-old babies and a 52-year-old man. At a press conference, the Ministry of Health has been able to determine the type of flu that has caused the infections, it is H3N2, although it has not yet been able to establish which is the variant of Covid that has infected them.

For their part, the Brazilian authorities wanted to emphasize that “for now there are no published scientific studies that confirm the clinical or immunological implications of joint infection.”

Is fluron a new virus?

The appearance of flurone has set off all the alarms in a society concerned about the rebound in Covid infections after the irruption of the omicron variant, but experts insist that it is not a new virus or a combination of both, it is a co-infection.

As stated by the director of the Catalan Health Service, virologists confirm that these cases are not “serious” and maintain that “there is no increase in complications.” Although they do clarify that people who do not have immunization for both viruses should be careful, since it has not yet been proven that the existence of both in a patient does not lead to more serious cases.

The scientific journal The lancet was the first to publish cases of this coinfection in 2020 and in none of the cases did they report a complicated recovery for the patient. The experts assure that it is common for these two viruses to be found in the environment and, for this reason, co-infection can occur, although the odds are significantly lower for a person with the full vaccination schedule.

They also point out that a healthy person should not be infected with both viruses, since it usually occurs in patients with weakened immune systems.
