Four processions will modify their route through the works in the center of Mérida

Four processions have finally chosen to modify their route due to the single platform works that are being carried out in the center of Mérida, whose conclusion was scheduled for the beginning of April but which have suffered a delay and will last until after Easter. .

As explained by the Consistory of Mérida, the lack of materials due to the transport strike has caused this latest delay. The works, which have focused on Valverde Lillo, Camilo José Cela and Archbishop Mausona streets, began in July with an execution period of eight months, so they should have already been completed. But the difficulties inherent to a project of this type have led to prolonging its execution.

Despite these problems, which already in the first two months of activity led to the estimation that an accumulated delay of twenty days had been generated, the works are practically completed. Apart from the final shots, the only thing left to do is adapt the connection between Arzobispo Mausona and Calle Almendralejo and the stretch of Camilo José Cela between Calle Cervantes and Avenida de Extremadura.

The local government expected the work to be completed in the first week of April, but the lack of material prevents these forecasts from being met. Despite this, the Consistory of Mérida has announced that access to Camilo José Cela would be stabilized to allow the passage of processions, with the alternative of entering Valverde Lillo through Archbishop Mausona.

Luis Miguel González, president of the Board of Brotherhoods, points out that this last option has finally been chosen despite the fact that it involves an alteration in several processional routes. “In the end we were affected by the transport strike,” he says.

As indicated, there was a doubt about the passage of the Descent of the Railway Brotherhood, the largest in the city, but it has been verified that it will be able to cross Archbishop Mausona street.

The processions that will be affected will be that of the Nazarene on Holy Wednesday and two on Holy Thursday, specifically that of the railwaymen (with the Descent) and that of the Brotherhood of La Paz.

Likewise, the route of the procession of the Risen One has been modified, in the first hours of Easter Sunday. Instead of taking different paths, all the images will go along the Rambla Santa Eulalia towards the Puerta de la Villa and the Plaza de España.

No official proclamation

On the other hand, the Board of Brotherhoods will present next Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Alcazaba Cultural Center the official magazine of the 2022 edition in an act in which there will be an exaltation of Holy Week.

This event has been organized due to the impossibility that Cardinal Carlos Amigo, as planned, could offer the Proclamation of Holy Week in Mérida after having undergone surgery earlier this month.

However, during the act a message will be read that Amigo has sent to all the residents of Mérida. The Board of Brotherhoods appreciates your intention to move to the city, but in the end it will not be possible, despite which an act has been prepared that is up to the task after two years without being held due to the pandemic.
