French Open Day 1 Men’s Best Bets
Hugo Dellien vs. Dominic Thiem
Dellien is having a decent season with a 31-14 record, playing exclusively on clay in 2022 so far. The Bolivian is lacking a deep main tour run this season but has a Challenger title and final under his belt this season already. He only has one main draw win at Roland Garros but I am pretty confident he will add a second here against Thiem. The Austrian being priced at the same odds as Dellien is crazy to me. Thiem has lost all six matches this season since his injury comeback from him, priced as a favorite in five of them. Dellien is a massive favorite for me here, so the bookmakers left a lot of value for us here. If you’re more daring, Dellien 3-0 or Dellien and under games could be worth exploring as Thiem has only won one set this year but I will stick with the moneyline here.

Camilo Ugo Carabelli vs Aslan Karatsev
We have a similar situation to the first match-up here. Ugo Carabelli successfully qualified, beating Alexander Ritschard in the final round. The Argentine has a similar resume to Dellien this year with a Challenger title and final while Karatsev has been struggling mightily on clay, almost as much as Thiem. The Russian has won only one of his six clay matches from him this year, including losses to Oscar Otte and Adrian Mannarino, the latter of which had not won a match on clay in three years. Ugo Carabelli is making his slam main draw debut here so while there could be some nerves, there are very few opponents who would have made a better draw than Karatsev here.

Alexander Zverev vs Sebastian Ofner
Closing us out with a bit more risk here, I am going for Zverev to win Ofner but drop at least one set. The German is probably among the top five favorites for the title as he comes in after a Madrid final and Rome semifinals. Zverev has a consistent record at Roland Garros, making the second week the past four years, reaching the quarterfinals three of those times. He does have a tendency to drop some sets in early rounds here, getting involved in a five-set match in one of the first two rounds all four of those years. Ofner is one of the more dangerous qualifiers in the draw, going 10-4 since he came back from injury to start his season in April and even winning his third Challenger title. There is the +900 option to go for a Zverev 3-2 victory but I opted for the tamer +200 option that also includes a 3-1 victory for Zverev.
