HBO and Amazon | Differences between ‘The House of the Dragon’ and ‘The Rings of Power’

In the era of prequels and streaming, the flagship series of HBO and Amazon fight for the audience, adding records

Two almost consecutive premieres, two millionaire bets, two stories that seek answers in the past and a struggle that is being waged on ‘streaming’. In the era of the prequels, ‘The house of the dragon’ and ‘The Rings of Power’ are cited in a present in which the platforms rise as champions of the fictional series. The bet is not minor in either of the two cases and the comparison, with its cautions, is inevitable.

The new fight for the Iron Throne would have cost the coffers of Warner Bros. Discovery, now owner of HBO, between 150 and 200 million dollars. At the rate of about 10 million per episode. It is, in total, twice what was invested on average in each season of the mother series: Game of Thrones came out at 100 million per installment.

In the case of the plot of the universe created by JRR Tolkien, the first season of ‘The Rings of Power’
would have cost about 465 million dollarsNew Zealand Tourism and Economic Development Minister Stuart Nash explained in 2021. Amazon has recovered in the archipelago the Middle Earth that Peter Jackson once imagined and has recorded what is already considered the most expensive series in history. To this must be added another 250 million that it is estimated that the platform paid for the rights to this part of history.

Thus, both series searched around the world in order to find the best locations for filming, some of them already known. ‘The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power’ in the North and South Islands of New Zealand. For indoor sequences, the Kumeu and Auckland studies were used. The first of them has an underwater diving tank and another ocean surface tank that simulate the seas bordering Middle Earth.

For its part, for ‘The House of the Dragon’ the interiors were built at the Warner Bros Leavesden studios in Watford, England. The main foreign locations are in the United Kingdom, Portugal and Spain.

Currently the series go hand in hand. And that each premiered in a different week. The dragons took flight on August 21 with an offer of 10 scheduled episodes, the same as in the first six seasons of ‘Game of Thrones’ (there are eight in total).

Los pelosos debuted on screen in Spain on September 2 twice. Nothing is accidental. With this movement, the episodes are even and Amazon, with two chapters less, makes sure to offer its end before, it follows, knowing what will happen to the Targaryens.

And, in fact, if nothing changes, it will be the fans of the dragons who will enjoy more minutes this season:

In the first episodes, both series spend an average of 60 minutes. It is a similar approach to the one followed by ‘Game of Thrones’ in the first deliveries, before winter arrived. The last two episodes of the last season lasted close to 80 minutes.

Now both plots look to the past, although there are prequels and prequels like those of the saga of ‘The Lord of the Rings’:

The beginning of the ‘Rings of Power’ series takes the viewer back to the beginning of the second age, which means that the new characters of the Tolkien universe live their days about 6,000 years before Frodo and company and even Bilbo in ‘ The Hobbit’.

‘House of the Dragon’, based on the novel ‘Fire and Blood’, travels back 200 years to focus on the Targaryen dynasty. It is 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, the eternal mother of dragons.

It has been three years of waiting in the case of the George RR Martin universe and nine in the case of Tolkien. The results, at least from the premiere, have been encouraging. Considering that platforms rarely openly share their audience data:

According to HBO, the first episode of ‘The House of the Dragon’ became the best premiere of an original series in the history of the platform in the US. There were 9.9 million viewers. It is far, yes, from the 19.3 million who saw the end of ‘Game of Thrones’ in May 2019.

In the case of ‘The Rings of Power’,
there are about 25 million viewers those who watched the first episode in 240 countries, which is once again a record audience figure.

And they are not finished yet, but it seems inevitable to think about what will come after this first installment:

At the moment, HBO confirmed a second season of ‘The house of the dragon’, although
there could be three or four planned. In the case of ‘The Rings of Power’, according to The Hollywood Reporter,
five in total are scheduled to bring ‘The Lord of the Rings’ to the small screen.
