The Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has requested «prudence» and recommended the use of the mask before the increase that is being registering cases of coronavirus in Spain and he has also called for the booster dose to be given to those who do not yet have it, while waiting for what the Vaccine Committee determines about the fourth dose and “when” it should be inoculated.

Following the proposal made a few hours ago by Catalonia that administer already the fourth dose to those over 80 years of age and to the users of the residences, given the increase in cases, the minister has insisted that the criteria of the Vaccine Report will continue to be followed.

In this sense, he recalled that it has already been agreed that there will be a fourth dose for people over 80 and residences, but “when” has yet to be determined.

He has pointed out that the Report meets periodically to analyze the situation, and will continue to do so, and the Ministry will be “waiting” for its new proposals to know when to proceed with the vaccination of these people “or any other decision you may make«.

And he also points out that it will be the Conference that assesses and weighs the possibility of the arrival of vaccines adapted to variants, in this case to Ómicron, «as many countries are doing».

“The Ministry is going to continue hand in hand with the advice of experts, who have brought us to be the reference country in world vaccination, with a vaccination strategy that has been exemplary and that all countries look at us and ask us. how has it been capable to date of having inoculated 95 million doses and having 92.7% of the population over 12 years of age With a complete guideline, we are talking about absolutely important, spectacular figures, and with more than 50% of people with a booster dose, ”said the minister.

Regarding the increase in cases of coronavirus that is being registered, Darias has indicated that, as has been done since the start of the pandemic, the evolution continues to be “permanently” monitored and has indicated that the increase in cases, mainly, is is giving as a consequence of the increase in new sublineages of omicron, such as BA4 and BA5which is more transmissible but less serious than those detected in previous stages.

new vaccines

Regarding the new vaccines adapted to variants that could arrive in the fall, as he said a few days ago, Darias explained that at the moment he is “waiting” to finalize the decision on what type, something that «It will also depend «on the laboratories presenting the clinical trials of these new vaccines to the European Medicines Agency so that they can be approved.

“We are at a point now, let’s say waiting because of course we can count on vaccines adapted to variants, as it appears in the contracts that the Government of Spain has signed together with the European Union with pharmaceutical companiesimportant centralized purchasing contracts, to always be in the best disposition to continue facing the virus”, he said.

And as for the Spanish vaccine against Covid, Darias has assured that it continues “his course” and hopes that he can be “in this fall”. “We have all our expectations placed on the Spanish vaccine,” she said.

In addition to the vaccine -the “most powerful weapon against the virus”, as Darias has insisted-, the minister recalled that the Government of Spain has acquired, and made available to the autonomous communities, medicines that are “very important” for to deal with Covid, such as the antiviral Paxlovid, of those that have been bought 344,000 treatments for 280 millionwhich help prevent an infected person from developing a serious illness, and the Evusheld, to protect people who, by themselves, do not generate antibodies from contagion.

Darias made these statements in Santander during a visit he made this Friday to the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital, together with the president of Cantabria, Miguel Angel Revilla; regional vice president, Paul Zuloaga; the Minister of Health, Raúl Pesquera, and the Government delegate, Ainoa Quiñones.
