The Ministry of Health and the communities address this Monday the conditions under which the face mask outdoors, a measure that the Government plans to approve tomorrow at the meeting of the Council of Ministers so that the new norm is in force on Thursday.
Minister Carolina Darias has summoned the councilors at 8 in the morning to a new extraordinary meeting of the Extraordinary Council of the National Health System to finalize the details of the end of the mask outdoors.
Darias advanced it last Friday, just three days after Congress will validate the controversial decree with which the Government re-imposed its use on the street at the end of December.
The effectiveness of the measure was widely questioned by experts in epidemiology and public health, but even so, it was one of the few agreed by the Conference of Presidents on December 22 to try to stop the escalation of cases due to the advance of omicron, as the minister has repeatedly recalled.
The Government’s announcement immediately raised criticism from many autonomies that, even sharing the fund, they accused him of “dizzy” and giving “lurches” with changes of criteria sudden on this matter without first consulting them or a scientific committee.
The president of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, it made him ugly to be “dizzy” to the population: “First the covid passport in some places yes and in others, no; the mask was important and then not, and it has not contained the sixth wave. It is also being shown that it is not necessary in outdoor spaces, only if the place is very crowded”.
The one of the Xunta, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, censored “the feeling of swinging and insecurity” that the government gives. “We would save ourselves a lot of sterile discussions if the Ministry accepted that when a proposal is based on clinical criteria we should not reject it only because of who makes it,” he reproached him.
Similarly, the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, criticized the “lurches” of the Executive and accused him of not having listened to a scientific committee before and technician nor to the communities, which are the ones with the powers.
However, he will abide by any decision but will continue to recommend that citizens, whenever possible, wear a mask, especially while the current wave of infections continues.
The President of Castile and León, Alfonso Fernandez Manueco, considered the announcement “electoralist” and a sign that President Pedro Sánchez “is only right when he rectify”. “If you propose the elimination of the mask a few days before the vote (on 13-F), we all realize that it is an electoral decision,” he said.
“I have nothing against removing the masks abroad, just the opposite. If a measure is taken, it will be very successful and will have my full support, although The Government of Aragon will be up to what is decided in the Government of Spain and above all in the Interterritorial Council”, affirmed for his part the president of this community, Javier Lambán.
The one from the Balearic Government, Francina Armengol, also shared the decision because “This requirement of the mask abroad had to be removed as soon as possible”, and now “the incidence of cases is beginning to drop significantly.”
Meanwhile, the Minister of Health of La Rioha, María Somalo, pointed out that “the progressive elimination of measures is feasible” against covid-19, and one of them is that of outdoor masks in a context such as the current one of “generalized decrease in incidence”.
Even if the tax is removed, the president of Cantabria, Miguel Angel Revilla, will continue to take it outdoors because, in his opinion, its use has been “positive”. “Let’s not fall into the feeling that since they tell us that we no longer have to wear a mask outdoors, this is controlled,” he concluded.
