Jose Altuve looked miffed as he sat in the Minute Maid Park grass without his helmet after pulling up lame at first base when he suffered a left leg injury while trying to beat out an infield single in the eighth inning Monday. Shortly after the Astros’ 8-3 win over the Angels, Altuve didn’t have many answers, except that he already was feeling a little better than expected and he would be checked by doctors Tuesday.

“I was a little bit (scared), but we’ll do some tests and hopefully everything is fine and it’s not anything crazy,” Altuve said in the Astros clubhouse after the win.

The Astros announced that Altuve had strained his left hamstring and was day-to-day.

Astros manager Dusty Baker offered some hope that his second baseman pulled up early enough on his sprint to first base that he didn’t injure the hamstring too badly. Altuve concurred with that assessment.

“I think I stopped a little bit and didn’t make it worse,” said Altuve, who is off to a 6-for-36 (.167) start to the season.
