Different variants of the Coronavirus have been detected in various parts of the world. South Africa, England and Brazil have been the countries where different strains have been detected.

But in California a variant has also been detected and has had a significant rebound in recent months, according to KTLA5. What does this imply? How much does it affect the population?

A more dangerous variant

This variant emerged in mid-2020, and has become the dominant strain of the virus in California. In fact, it spreads faster and is much more deadly than the other strains.

So much so that it has been detected that it is capable of evading the antibodies already created and those inoculated through the vaccine.

This situation keeps the scientific community concerned. Infectious disease researcher Dr. Charles Chiu, who leads a team of epidemiologists and other specialists, mentions that both the British and Californian strains have improved capabilities.

If to this is added the possibility that both can circulate in the population, then the risk of returning to a scene of infections and even death is greater.

In fact, the greatest fear of this specialist is that both Covid strains are in the same person, exchange information about their mutations and from that a more dangerous strain than the already known one may emerge.

Less effective vaccines

The vaccines have a degree of effectiveness on SARS-CoV-2, but experts fear that, with the new variants, the vaccines will be less effective, especially if the contagion capacity of the mutations is much greater.

The fear of the experts is to return to a scenario like last year, where they were to the limit of capacities. In other words, it would be like going back to the beginning and having to take more drastic measures to try to stop the spread of the virus.

This scenario is not very encouraging, especially if one takes into account what has happened after the festivities and the relaxation of care and prevention measures.

What to do

Although this outlook seems bleak, Dr. Chiu argues that the new information and recent research should be a stimulus to redouble the effort and reduce contagion.

For this, it is necessary to include public health measures, such as the use of the mask and limit public activities, as well as accelerate the vaccination campaign.

So, while it is true that this variant is more dangerous, it is also true that if health and biosafety protocols are followed, it is possible to prevent it.

Scientists are examining this new strain to figure out how to stop it or slow down their efforts, but it is everyone’s responsibility to remain calm and follow whatever measures the authorities deem appropriate.

It is also important not to panic or be alarmed despite the situation, as this would generate spikes in other health problems, both physical and mental.
