How group play, standings work for 2022 tournament


The 2022 Winter Olympics got underway before the official start of the Games. Women’s hockey was one of the sports that began competition ahead of the Feb. 4 opening ceremony in Beijing.

The women’s hockey tournament is composed of 10 countries divided into groups of five teams each. Each team is scheduled to compete in four preliminary-round games, with eight teams advancing to the quarterfinals.

The preliminary round will take place Feb. 3-8, followed by the quarterfinals on Feb. 11-12, the semifinals on Feb. 14, the bronze-medal game on Feb. 16 and the gold-medal game on Feb. 17.

Olympic women’s hockey standings

The 10 teams were divided into two groups of five ahead of the tournament. The five highest-ranked teams were placed together in Group A. All teams from Group A and the top three finishers in Group B will advance to the quarterfinals.

Czechia made its Olympic debut with a 3-1 victory over host nation China on Feb. 3. It has a shot at advancing to the final after reaching the quarterfinals against Finland at the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship.
