How to change the default location of downloads in Windows 10 and 11

We already know that both Windows 10 and Windows 11 default to one folder for all downloads. Well, if you want to change that location, you should read this article where we tell you how you can do it.

The location where everything that we download in Windows is saved is predetermined by the operating system so that it is always the same one that you use.

Like many of the Redmond system parameters, this is something that can be changed, whether you have version 10 or 11.

This is something important if we want to move all our downloads to a unit that has a larger capacity and where we are not so fair, especially if we have to start downloading files that take up a lot of space.

It’s the perfect way for us to call the shots in this essential part of the system. That is, we will control where the files are downloaded to have them more at hand and in the location that we want exactly.

The steps that we must follow in both versions can be called similar. Let’s see what they are.

Custom location for downloads in Windows 11

As is evident, Windows 11 lends itself to changing the default folder and in which everything we download is saved.

The reasons for doing so can be many, from wanting a completely custom folder, to needing to put it on a drive with more space.

Be that as it may, the steps that we must follow in Windows 11 are the following

  • We open the File Explorer with the keyboard shortcut that is by pressing the keys Win + E.
  • Now we right-click on the folder Downloads.
  • In the drop-down that appears we must click on Properties.
  • We switch to the tab Location and click the button Move so you can choose the path to save all new downloads.
  • Now, from the file chooser interface, we move to the new folder for downloads and click on select folder.
  • At that moment, Windows asks us to move all the files that we have downloaded to the new downloads folder.
  • If we want all our downloads in one place, we must inevitably click on Yes.
  • It may be that we regret it and want to go back to what was at the beginning, so what we should do is click on the button restore default and use the folder Username>Downloads as the default download location in Windows 11.

Microsoft Store app download location

Another of the areas where we can modify the downloads is the Microsoft application store, since it is also an area that we use a lot so that certain applications are not only installed, but also their executable files are downloaded.

The reasons for making this change are the same as we have explained in the previous case and it is usually due to a lack of space, something that if we change to a disk with more storage we will not have any problem with it.

But leaving aside the reasons for making this change, we are going to explain how to make this change, very simple if we follow the following guidelines:

  • We open Setting of the system by pressing Windows + I.
  • At that moment, without leaving System, click on Storage for everything related to this task.
  • In the section storage managementwe expand Advanced storage settingsthen click on New content storage location.
  • You will now see a section that says New apps will be saved to.
  • If we click on the drop-down list below that header, we can choose a new location to store applications.
  • This made it possible to choose another storage drive for apps, as well as documents, music, photos, videos, movies, TV shows, and even offline maps.

Change screenshot location in Windows 11

If you have taken a screenshot in Windows 11, you already know that it is saved in C:UsersImagesScreenshots.

Well, this location can be changed to another that we want, if we follow a few simple steps that we are going to tell you right now.

  • We sail to the images folder (C:UsersImages) and click with the right mouse button on the folder Screenshots and select from the drop-down that we are presented with the option Properties.
  • Let’s go to the tab Location and click the button Move to in this way choose the new folder to store all your screenshots.
  • From the file selector interface, we must go to the new folder that we want to use for the screenshots and we choose it by clicking on select folder.
  • Once the new destination for the screenshots has been chosen, click on Apply and then in To acceptso that the changes made are confirmed.
  • At this time we will see how Windows will ask us to move all the screenshots from the previous folder to the new one. This is an optional step, and you can choose to keep them where they are or take them to the new location, that is up to each one.
  • If we change our mind, we just have to click on restore default to return to the same default screenshots folder in Windows 11.

This guide that we have prepared with features, comparisons and best options by price range will help you choose the best SSD (both internal and external) for your device.

Custom location for downloads in Windows 10

To change the location of the downloads folder in Windows 10 we must follow the same steps that we have done in Windows 11, since it is executed in the same way in both systems.

That is, we will have to go to the Downloads folder with the File Browserpress with the right button mouse over that folder and then choose the option to Properties in the dropdown that is thrown before us.

At that moment we go to the tab Location and within it we just have to click on Move, to then find a new path where we want the system downloads folder to be established.

In this way we will be able to change the location of the downloads that are made in Windows 10, so that it is where we want and not where the Microsoft software determines.

As you have seen, it is very easy to change locations of the different downloads in both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
