How to decide whether to install Windows 32 or 64 bits

If we have to install Windows from scratch or create a bootable installer, it may be the case that we are not sure whether to use a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system.

If you are not sure what we are talking about, you should continue reading because it will interest you, since if you install the wrong option it could cause a performance problem that would increase as time goes by.

Let’s see what the differences are between 32 and 64-bit Windows, which is the option that we must install and what considerations we must take into account.

Table of Contents:

What is the difference between them?

Everything has to do with the processor that we have in our computer, since there are two types, that is, 32-bit and 64-bit.

Obviously, that of 64-bit is a machine that is capable of processing much more information at once, which makes it more powerful. 32-bit processors still exist, but they occur in old computers, since modern ones have been 64-bit for years.

One thing we don’t think there is any doubt about is that if you have an old 32-bit processor, you will only be able to install a 32-bit operating system, although, on the contrary, it would be possible to install a 32-bit Windows on a 64 processor, although we would be wasting it.

So that you better understand that 32 bits are almost obsolete, the new Windows 11 only has a 64-bit version, while previous versions such as Windows 10, 8 or 7 have both possibilities.

To make sure that you have the correct Windows on the correct processor (in Windows 11 there is no doubt) you can go, in the case of Windows 10, to Settings > System > About, to see how within the section device specificationsthere is a section that says Type of systemwhere it indicates how much is the operating system and the processor.

In case you don’t know, x86 refers to 32-bit architecture, while x64 means 64-bit.

What are the advantages of 64 bits?

The advantages of the 64-bit version are obvious, and in many ways, not just a few.

The 32-bit version supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM, while the 64-bit can use all the RAM it needssince in theory they could reach 17 million TB.

When you have a 64-bit Windows, you will see two Program Files folders appear, one that says x86 (32-bit) and another that says nothing (64-bit). Windows does that to differentiate the programs 32-bit, since they are very different in their structure.

In the security 64-bit Windows has much more to saysince in this type of system most of the improvements come from low-level adjustments, such as driver signing, something that is unthinkable in 32 bits.

However, if you have an early 64-bit processor, it may not support some minor features. This can cause problems with 64-bit Windows.

To make sure your system is working properly, you can run 64bit Checker, a program that will tell you if your hardware is ready for 64-bit Windows.

Download and install 32 or 64 bit

Today there are few computers that have to install Windows 32 bits and the vast majority already work with 64 bits.

If you buy a new computer, it is completely certain that the version will be 64 bits. If we buy a second-hand one, it may be the case that it is one with a 32-bit processor, although, as we already told you, it must be old.

If we have bought a somewhat old computer or we already had it and we want to install a more up-to-date version of Windows that is 64 bits, we must make sure that the processor can carry the systembecause, as we have already told you, it is not possible to install a 64 on a 32-bit processor.

If you have already watched it and you processor is 32-bit, you should forget about Windows 11but you can run Windows 10, since there is a version for this type of processor.

To achieve this you must go to the Microsoft download page and select Windows 10, if that is the objective.

Then click the button Download (Download tool now) in the section Create Windows installation media (Create Windows 10 installation media) to get the Media Creation Tool.

This software will guide you through the update for the current PCalthough you will also be able to create a bootable USB drive to install Windows on another machine, something that we are not interested in now.

Following all the steps that appear, there will come a time when you must choose the Architecture for installation, which is where you should select 64-bit or 32-bit. Windows will recommend an option based on what it detects from your PC.

by having a genuine copy of windowsyou will be able to upgrade to version 10 or 11, if you want to try, for free, since your current product key will activate the new version.

If, on the other hand, you have to activate Windows, when buying a license it has nothing to do with whether we are dealing with a 32-bit or 64-bit system, since this data is only for running Windows.

From now on, you will have a clearer idea of what we are talking about when we refer to 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, knowing what each one of them is, how they are used, and what advantages the most used currently has, such as 64.
