A new test allows to measure the cellular immunity generated by the vaccines against the coronavirus and the infection itself

Now, thanks to a simple and quick test, it is possible to know how long the immunity provided by the coronavirus vaccines lasts. These are tests similar to PCR, which during the pandemic have demonstrated the ability to measure the body’s cellular response to covid quickly, easily, and cheaply from a large number of samples.

These tests arise as a result of research carried out by the Carlos III Health Institute in collaboration with other bodies such as those linked to the Madrid hospitals of La Paz, Gregorio Marañón or October 12, among others.

OAB, the new side effect of vaccines against covid-19

The results were published last Monday by the prestigious journal ‘Nature Biotechnology’, which reports on the research that has allowed the development of a simple test based on PCR technology that measures specific cellular immunity against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and that reveals how long the protection provided by vaccines against COVID-19 lasts, offering very useful information for possible public health decisions, according to the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

A team from the Carlos III National Center for Microbiology (ISCIII) has co-led this research, which has made it possible to develop a new test to measure specific cellular immunity against SARS-CoV-2 infection and determine how long the protection conferred by the bacteria lasts. vaccines against COVID-19.

CXCL10 molecule

The study, which has been developed together with scientists from the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and the Duke School of Medicine in Singapore.

Using massive sequencing techniques in individuals vaccinated and infected with SARS-CoV-2, the team of researchers has identified the CXCL10 molecule as a new biomarker of cellular immunity.

This innovative technology facilitates the evaluation of cellular immunity in population studies and clinical trials with a high number of participants, which represents a great methodological advance.

In addition, this pioneering trial makes it possible to differentiate the immune response of vaccination against COVID-19 from infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is why it has direct implications for possible public health policies.

Jordi Ochando, a scientist at the ISCIII National Center for Microbiology and one of the authors of the work, explains that this technology “allows hundreds of samples to be analyzed per day because it is based on PCR technology”.

accessible technology

In addition, the equipment to carry out the test is available in most hospitals and research centers, so this technology is accessible to the entire population in general.

Thanks to its effectiveness in measuring both the functioning of our defenses against the virus and the duration of vaccine protection, something very important for determining herd immunity and designing vaccination campaigns.”
