How to load the trunk of the car to travel at Easter

A. NOGUEROL The Ship of Avila

With the arrival of Easter, and once the toughest moments of the pandemic have passed, many drivers have planned a vacation trip for the next few days.

When loading the trunk of the car, it is necessary to have good planning, with which we will gain in safety and also in consumption. As Mario Arnaldo explains, since
Associated European Motoriststhe first thing we will take into account will be “doing proper planning to know what things we are really going to need” and thus avoid overloading the car with unnecessary things.

With this in mind, the heaviest things, not the bulkiest, should be placed at the bottom and closest to the seat in the trunk “so as not to unbalance the point of stability of the vehicle”. Nor should we put all the weight on one side for the same reason.

In addition, we must have all the luggage perfectly secured since a loose item can be projected into the passenger compartment of the car and hit us, in the event of an accident.

We must also clear the line of sight of the rearview mirror of packages. In addition, if the car is loaded, it is highly recommended to check the tire pressure because having them poorly regulated can cost us more fuel.

How to distribute the load?

•Try to put all the objects in the trunk of the car, even the very light ones, and place the load in a balanced way so that it does not affect the stability of the vehicle.

•Distribute the packages so that the heaviest are on the bottom: the largest and most rigid suitcases should be placed at the bottom and the rest of the luggage on top, tying them to the fastening points in the trunk if possible.

•If the cargo does not completely fill the trunk and there is a possibility that it may move, it should be secured with elastic “octopuses” or nets.

•Do not place objects on the rear parcel shelf that impede the correct visibility of the driver, or on the rear parcel shelf, because during sudden braking they will become projectiles and cause serious injuries to passengers.

•Fasten the rear seat belts even if there are no passengers. It is an additional support that helps prevent luggage from passing from the trunk to the passenger compartment.

•It is not advisable to carry luggage on the roof of the car. The best roof racks are the closed ones or chests, conceived as airtight trunks, with a lock and an aerodynamic shape.

•If you carry bicycles, secure them firmly, especially to avoid accidents from drivers behind your vehicle. Normally there are 3 fastening points: the two wheels (through adjustable straps) and the fastening of a diagonal bar. Before loading the bicycles, take out all the accessories that may fall (jerrycans, odometer, inflator…). Remember that you should slow down with the bikes mounted, as the aerodynamics will be affected.

•Try not to fill the trunk. Among other things, because you will end up buying objects (it always happens) that end up in the trunk.

•It is important to remember that the behavior of the car changes if it is loaded. In addition to the loss of power, more evident the smaller the engine, the braking distance is lengthened.
