How to make your Twitter timeline less toxic

If you have noticed that the moment you enter Twitter, an important part of your timeline is developed on rough and inadvisable topics, the best thing you can do is follow the advice that we are going to give you below, so that the social network stops to be toxic.

It is clear that, on Twitter, like all social networks, all kinds of topics are shared, different kinds of people and different approaches on similar issues. The problem is that there may come a time when the topics you see are increasingly toxic, even annoying you.

Twitter is a place that is regulated so that certain content does not appear, but we also know that this regulation does not prevent us from seeing racist comments, messages of incitement to hatred or clearly false and fraudulent information.

We agree that all social networks share a certain part of toxicity, but when it reaches important levels, it is the moment in which we must put the brakes on so as not to continue enduring.

Many use the anonymity of the social network to write comments that in real life they would not dare to tell under any circumstances. It is that anonymity that makes them so brave to launch all kinds of comments out of place.

Another problem may be the limitation of 240 characters, that is, it may be that a person has not been completely clear in a comment, which can generate others who are toxic towards that person or their opinion, and you know, toxicity creates more toxicity.

We are going to tell you how you are going to be able to limit this type of messages and thus have a less toxic Twitter.

Unfollow or block

The easiest way for our timeline to limit its toxicity is to opt for one of the solutions provided by the network itself.

This is a good solution for every time you find content that resembles what we don’t want to see and that makes us uncomfortable. The actions that we can perform are:

  • Stop following: With this we will see how the number of tweets of that person in our timeline is reduced, but it is not guaranteed that from time to time one does not appear.
  • Mute: With this we will ensure that there are no new messages from that account in our feed. The problem is that we will continue to receive notifications if we still follow said user.
  • Block: It is the most effective way if we do not want to know anything about that account, since it will block any type of interaction with it.

mute words

We all know that there are certain topics, and specifically certain words, that can very easily degenerate into toxic and inappropriate messages.

That is why it is best that there are certain words that we keep away. The best way is to block them. Here we can place obscene, controversial words or those that we know will bring annoying tweets.

To achieve this we must do the following:

  • In the Twitter mobile app, we touch our profile picture.
  • Then we will Settings and privacy > Privacy & Security > mute and block > silenced words.
  • We press the blue circle icon and a plus inside, which is located in the bottom right corner of your screen.
  • On the next screen, enter the word or phrase that we want to silence, we mark the option that says start timeline and then we choose if we want it to be muted on Any either From people you don’t follow.
  • Click on Save and that word or phrase will already be muted.

Not following some topics

Just as tweets can be toxic, we all know there are topics of conversation that are sure to attract controversy or are already abusive and out of place.

To stop following these topics we must perform these steps:

  • In the application of our mobile device, click on the profile picture.
  • Now we must enter Topics.
  • In this page we will see the topics that interest us, since the right of each one says Following. If we want to stop following them, we just have to click there so that they are no longer of our choice.

The topics that we have found are those that we have chosen to follow, but then there are others that Twitter has been assigning, depending on what we have seen or visited on the social network.

To stop following these topics that have been assigned to us, we must perform these steps:

  • We visited our twitter data page in the browser.
  • We log in if necessary.
  • then we go to Interest and ad data.
  • Next, we enter Twitter Interests.
  • On the next page, we must deactivate the blue click on the right of each assigned topic and that we are not really interested in.

hide media

It may be that there are times that all the toxic content comes from videos or photos, although the Twitter algorithm does a good job and labels (sometimes eliminates) this type of element that can be harmful, but other times it is not like that and they reach us .

To stop receiving it permanently, you must do the following:

  • We open the mobile application and click on the profile picture.
  • We are going to Settings and privacy > Privacy & Security > content you see.
  • On the next page, we uncheck the box for Show photos and videos that may contain sensitive content.
  • Once we’ve done this, the algorithm will do its best to keep sensitive media out of our Twitter timeline.

hide answers

It may be that we have suffered some type of attack or trolling by other users when we have posted a tweet, which was apparently innocent, but which has provoked toxic, bad-sounding and exaggerated responses from others.

To prevent this from happening to us again, you can always hide the answers and thus tackle the problem from the beginning.

To achieve this, follow these steps:

  • We play in the answer you want to hide.
  • Next, click on the three dot icon in the upper right corner of the response.
  • Now we must click on hide answer. In this way, the answer will no longer be seen and we will be free of any problem.

With everything you have just seen, we can make Twitter less toxic and have a better experience within the social network.

These are very simple steps that will help manage Twitter from a less strident point of view.
