How we met: ‘My sister and my dad were scared when I said I was getting married’ | Life and Style

Benjamin Speed was on vacation in Los Angeles when his friend suggested that he meet Blanca Lista, a film producer. “I am a composer who works in the film and television industry, and he thought we would have common interests,” recalls Benjamin. Blanca set aside some time one afternoon for the meeting. “I realized that he was handsome and radiated confidence, which was very attractive.” Benjamin instantly fell in love with her and asked her out via email, but she declined. “I thought I was passing through the city and my mother was staying at the time,” he says. Benjamin says he returned to Australia feeling “really sad”.

A year later, in September 2012, Blanca was offered the opportunity to visit Australia for work purposes. He visited four states over the course of his month-long trip, which ended in New South Wales. Once there, he visited Sydney, where Benjamin lived. “Our old mutual friend recommended that we get in touch again, so I wrote to him.” He was delighted to hear from Blanca and took her to her favorite restaurant in Chinatown. Blanca was scheduled to leave the next day, but before the meeting she extended her trip for another 24 hours. “I think I already knew that I would want more time with him.”

The couple chatted all night and ended up back at their hotel for dessert. “I told her that I had fallen in love with her that night. I knew he was leaving and he had a chance, ”says Benjamin. Although she shared her feelings, Blanca was scared. He left and she went up to her room to think things over. “I emailed him a poem about taking risks,” he said. Deciding she couldn’t ignore the connection, she invited him to watch movies in her hotel room the next day, and they stayed up all night talking.

A few days later, Benjamin flew to Los Angeles to see her again. “The weekend was very emotionally intense. By Sunday, we knew we wanted to be together and get married, ”he says. They called their families to break the news. “They didn’t even know we were dating someone,” Blanca says. “But for some reason, when I called my dad, he said, ‘You’re getting married, aren’t you?’ I think he knows me so well. “Although they were surprised, they supported his decision.” My parents also got married quite quickly and, although they knew that this was not like me, they trust my decisions, “he says. Benjamin’s family is also “My sister and my dad were especially scared,” he says.

The couple were married a week later in Las Vegas by an Elvis impersonator. They were inspired by the movie True Romance, where the characters get married after just one encounter. “He sent me a clip from the movie and it felt like fate,” Blanca says. After the wedding, they celebrated with a parachute jump to “represent their leap of faith.” Immediately afterwards, Benjamin returned to Australia to finish a project he was working on. They didn’t see each other again until Christmas, when they both flew to Spain to visit Blanca’s family. Thereafter, Benjamin continued to move between Los Angeles and Australia before obtaining a visa to the United States in August 2014.

Since then, they have been based in Los Angeles with their son, who was born in early 2015, but will be spending part of this year in Australia for Benjamin’s work. “He’s already there, but I’ll be meeting him in Queensland for six months in April. It’s like closing the circle in our relationship, ”says Blanca. “Ben is the noblest human being I have ever met. He is an extraordinary father and constantly challenges me to be a better human being. “Benjamin, for his part, admires Blanca’s honesty and passion.” She has a lot of integrity and intelligence, and she is super sexy. I knew he loved her from day one. we met “.
