HP will compensate with up to 95 euros to some users who could not use third-party cartridges in their printers

Printer manufacturers have long held a particular crusade to prevent their users from using third-party cartridges in various models. Now an agreement between HP and Euroconsumers will allow some of them to obtain compensation for this classic criticism of a segment that still does not fully solve the problem.

What happened. HP installed in some of its printers the “Dynamic Security” technology with which it tried to protect the quality of the experience and protect its intellectual property (and the astronomical price of this precious liquid). That system, however, made some printers stop working if ink cartridges that were not from HP itself were used —the manufacturer announced that it would later allow it, although the controversy did not end— and that they were equipped with electronic circuits or non-original chips. Other manufacturers use similar and just as terrible techniques, but users fight against these types of measures and during the pandemic there were ironic situations in this area.

Euroconsumers achieves a (small) victory. This European organization that defends consumers —and within which the OCU is— denounced the fact. As indicated in OCU, after several meetings, both parties “have decided not to continue with any legal action and have reached a friendly agreement.” HP will create a fund of up to 1,350,000 euros for the payment of these compensations. The compensation affects users from Belgium, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

But HP has done nothing wrong. At least not according to that settlement agreement, which “cannot be taken as an admission of any wrongdoing or wrongdoing by HP.” At Euroconsumers they also do not recognize that their claims are unfounded. Simply this is a “sign of the commitment of both parties to work for the benefit of consumers.”

how much money can you get. The compensation varies between 20.35 and 50 euros depending on the printer model. It is possible to obtain an additional compensation of 45 euros “if you can prove with evidence that your losses have been of an amount that exceeds the compensation”. In no case will the compensation exceed the maximum limit of 95 euros per claim. If the consumer adheres to the settlement agreement, he waives legal action against HP for this reason.

how to claim. As explained in the OCU, you must leave a series of personal and printer data, as well as a photo of the front and back of your ID. It is also interesting to add the printer status form, which can be obtained from its Configuration options. The deadline for claims ends on March 6, 2023. Payments (after verifications) will occur from that day.
