Hyundai Ioniq 6, the most efficient electric car of Koreans

Until very recently, the struggle to take part in the market for electric car it was based on offering the most spectacular SUV or the most technologically advanced vehicle. The Audi e-tron, the Mercedes EQS, BMW iX have been good examples of this. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 came with the most conservative (and logical) strategy: to sell a kind of SUV, the fashionable bodywork and the one that for many is necessary to spend good money on a new vehicle.

Over time, manufacturers are discovering that part of the success of the popularization of the electric vehicle is not there. Efficiency is key in a vehicle that takes us a long time to charge and getting the most out of the battery (with an accompanying bodywork) can be the incentive that rescues sedans.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is one such example. A spectacular sedan with clean shapes, with a aerodynamic coefficient of 0.21 Cx, right between the Mercedes EQS (0.20 Cx) and the Mercedes EQE (0.22 Cx). They want the result to be reflected in their consumption and autonomy: estimated consumption of less than 14 kWh/100 km (according to the WLTP cycle) with its 53 kWh battery and propulsion version. A configuration with 111 kW (148 hp) of power.

An all-wheel drive dual-motor option capable of generating 239 kW (320 hp) and 605 Nm of torque is added. In this case, the promised autonomy is 610 km and its battery has a capacity of 77.4 kW. From the brand they assure that this configuration is capable of reaching 100 km/h from a standstill in 5.1 seconds. There is also the possibility of mounting the larger capacity battery with the rear-wheel drive version.

In addition, the secret to making the Ioniq 6 a practical car for long journeys is not only in its available autonomy, but also in its charging power. The battery accepts loads of 800 Volts and, therefore, a power of up to 350kw. With it, going from 10 to 80% of the capacity is a matter of 18 minutes.

A real battery of driving aids

Beyond its more technical figures, Hyundai continues betting on a workforce in security matter and very complete ADAS driving assistance systems. It is something that the Hyundai Ioniq 5 already boasts, as my colleague Juan Carlos López highlighted in his analysis.

The Hyundai SmartSense standard package includes adaptive cruise control that ensures a level 2 of automation in the functions. In other words, the car travels at the speed entrusted to it and maintains a safety distance from the car in front, but also stays in the center of the lane and changes lanes when we tell it to.

Therefore, it includes emergency braking, signal recognition, blind spot sensor (with its own screen when activating the intermittent) and other assistance systems such as 360º cameras, high beam assistant or driver attention detectorrecommending resting when fatigue increases or, at traffic lights, alerting the driver that the car in front has already started if it detects that we are still stopped.

The car park is fully automated and, if we park on our own, it also includes its own emergency braking for parking maneuvers, with a pedestrian detector.

In addition to all this battery of systems, the car also learn from our driving when we have adaptive cruise control off. Once we start them, the vehicle adopts a driving style similar to what we have been doing over time.

High degree of digitization

In addition to all the aids already mentioned, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 will extend the conception that we have of the vehicle beyond the car itself. In fact, it has a digital space called hyundai studio for interested people to enjoy content from the car itself with augmented reality and virtual reality.

As for their screens, both the dashboard and the infotainment system will have a size of 12 inches. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility will be via Bluetooth. You can also sync two devices at the same time.

This 4x4 with robotic legs was as off-road as it was unreal. Hyundai has changed its mind and is going to start building them

If we talk about proprietary softwarethe Hyundai Ioniq 6 will be able to receive updates via OTA, the browser will show a dynamic map with the radius of action that allows us the autonomy available at that time and the infotainment system will be supported by eight speakers (one of them a subwoofer) signed by Bose.

To close with some aesthetic details that speak of the personality of this new Hyundai electric car, some LEDs on the steering wheel will show us the state of charge, the idea of the “parametric pixel” is maintained for its taillights, with lines of LEDs of the same style that were advanced with the Hyundai Seven and, with the sports mode activated, the interior lights change dynamically with the use of the throttle.
