Insured production grows 2% in the current campaign and stands at over 1.75 million tons, with an insured capital of more than 906 million

Once the deadline for subscribing to the fruit insurance modules (apricot, plum, apple, peach, nectarine, Paraguayo, platerina and pear) has ended, which include coverage against frost -the most damaging risk in the last harvest-, and according to the data recorded by Agroseguro, the insured production has grown by 2% in total, standing at over 1.75 million tons. Likewise, the insured capital and area also experienced growth in 2022, reaching 906 million euros (+3.7%) and 79,000 hectares (+3.2%), respectively, which, once again, confirms the confidence of the sector in agricultural insurance.

In 2021, the fruit harvest was seriously affected by the severe frosts that occurred on the San José weekend (March 18-21), and again during the months of April and May. Then, hail storms were felt, also repeatedly, in many areas of the Spanish geography.

The growth in Extremadura, they indicate from Agroseguro, is important, with more than 239,900 tons insured (+4.3%), with a high insurance of the Extremaduran productions of plum, peach, nectarine, Paraguayan, apricot and pear. The value of the insured production exceeds, once again, 131 million euros.

In total, the compensation paid to insured fruit growers rose to 144 million euros (9% more than in 2020), again placing this crop as the first in payments received. Of that figure, 66 million corresponded to frost claims and another 49 million to hail, a risk that fruit growers can still protect themselves from, since the subscription period for module P (hail module) ends between April 30 and on May 31, according to area and crop.

Insurance grows among most fruit-growing regions

Specifically, and without taking into account the policies of complementary modules (those that are subscribed with advanced cultivation to adjust the insurance to production expectations), the insured tons grow in regions where fruit trees have great weight within their agricultural structure. , such as Aragón, Extremadura -already mentioned-, Region of Murcia, Andalusia and La Rioja. In addition, insurance is maintained in Catalonia, the main producing area.

In the case of Aragón, the insured capital has grown to 198 million euros (+3.3%), with significant increases in the main crops: nectarine, peach, Paraguayan, apricot, plum or platerine. Production insured against frost exceeds 412,600 tons (+1.2%).

The insured capital in the Region of Murcia has grown by 1.9%, to 147 million euros, with 209 million tons insured (+1.6%), growth driven by nectarine, the most insured production within the fruit line.

As far as Andalusia is concerned, most of the 51,100 tons insured (an increase of 4%) corresponds to nectarines, maintaining the same as the previous year the insurance of peaches, plums, Paraguayans and apricots. As a whole, the insured capital stood at 31.2 million euros, 0.9% more than in 2021.

In the case of La Rioja, the production of fruit trees with protection against frost has exceeded 47,970 tons (+2%) and 24 million euros (+3%), driven by the growth experienced by apple insurance of table, the peach and the plum. In the case of pears (the main crop in the fruit insurance line in the region), the figures for 2021 are maintained, with 34,000 tons and 18 million in insured capital.

In addition, due to its importance in the production of fruit trees, the insurance figures for Catalonia are relevant, which are above 714,000 tons, with a production value of 325 million euros, mainly nectarine, apple, pear and Paraguayan. This equals the insurance figures of the previous campaign, which will be exceeded once the contracting of complementary insurance is closed.
