Israel admits the possibility that the murdered Palestinian journalist was shot by its military

The preliminary investigation launched by Israel into the incident in which the Palestinian-American journalist Shirin Abu Akle was shot in the head while covering a clash between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank offers no conclusions about the origin of the bullet that ended with his life but admits, among the various theories he is considering, that he could have been shot by his own soldiers.

“There is a possibility that she was hit by the Israeli forces shooting at the terrorists”according to the preliminary report collected by the ‘Jerusalem Post’, which places the reporter about 200 meters from the Israeli military deployed on Wednesday in the West Bank city of Jenin to carry out a series of arrests that were answered, according to Israel, by “Widespread and uncontrolled shooting.”

In this sense, a senior official of the Israeli Army involved a military man on the scene on Thursday “most likely” of the reporter’s death: “A soldier with an assault rifle and an excellent targeting system was shooting at a terrorist with an M16 who was shooting at our guts,” according to statements to the ‘Washington Post’.

“We are studying Shirín’s position because this is the most likely scenario of his death”added this source, on condition of anonymity, before reporting that Israeli military investigators have appropriated the assault rifles of the troops involved for analysis.

Another senior Israeli military official admitted to the ‘Wall Street Journal’ that the Army was investigating the incident on the premise that “a bullet from an Israeli soldier could have ricocheted off the ground or a wall and hit Abu Aklé.”

The preliminary Israeli report maintains that Israeli security forces acted amid “dozens of uncontrolled shots” against the military vehicles that entered Jenin and “carried out in the direction in which the reporter was heading.”

Israel insists that this is all the information it can offer at the moment since the bullet is in the possession of the Palestinian government, which refuses to hand it over to the Israeli authorities, as the Minister for Civil Affairs, Hussein al-Sheikh, has already stated.

“Israel has requested a joint investigation and that he be handed over the bullet that killed the journalist. We have rejected it and affirm that our investigation will be completed independently,” the minister said on his Twitter account, before saying that all evidence and witness statements confirm that the journalist died because of the Israeli special units.
