‘I’ve been wearing this look for 20 years’: people who never change their style | Life and Style

‘I have had some of my clothes for a decade, and they are still in very good condition’

I always wear Issey Miyake tunic dresses and shawls, in various colors, with leggings and boots in winter, secured with three vintage Bakelite clasps. I have been wearing this uniform for about 10 years. After I gained weight, I couldn’t find anything that looked good and was not my size. I discovered the Japanese designer on eBay, where I also discovered vintage bags and briefcases, and Bakelite jewelry, to complement. All of these items are reasonably priced on the second hand market, and I like the sustainability – I’ve had a few pieces for a decade and they’re still in good shape. It’s fun to have someone drive in and say, “I love your clothes!” That gives me a kick. I don’t have to spend a lot of money on clothes anymore and it takes me five minutes to get dressed. I know what clothes look good on me and look good, and being dressed in beautiful clothes helps combat age discrimination and shame. Leslie Dollen, Retired, Minnesota

When I ordered myself in 2014, I donated all of my clothes to charity. I now have a wardrobe consisting of five pairs of black pants, one pair of black shorts, 10 black office shirts, and three black cassocks. I wear them every day, regardless of whether I am in church or not. It is my street clothes, my formal attire, my clothes to go out. I even wear them on vacation. Black is the traditional color of the priest, showing that he has died to himself and to the world to serve something else. Not having other clothes is because this is not a job but a lifestyle. I don’t wear it when I’m “working”; I live in it. This saves me a great deal of time in the morning, black is never a bad choice and paired with an office necklace makes perfect sense. I always wear the same thing: an Old Town jacket (local manufacturer) with a Tootal scarf, a dark polo shirt (long-sleeved wool in winter and short-sleeved cotton in summer), Levi’s and Dr Martens shoes or boots. I have been using this for many years and it started when I moved to Norfolk from London 20 years ago. I wanted to wear clothes that didn’t look wrinkled when they came out of a bag (I work outside the home most of the time). I have also found that I do not like to wear “hard” cotton shirts because I find them too limited, so my appearance is very comfortable. Since I work in a business where people generally dress casually, I don’t change my appearance between work and home. Not having to think about clothes saves time. The only time it changes is when it’s hot and I wear shorts. Peter Miller, TV and film line producer, Norfolk

I always wear a black cotton T-shirt, black stretch boxers, and black socks (all from Punto Blanco), with black straight twill pants (Amazon Essentials), black sneakers (Decathlon’s Tarmak Protect 100), and a black hoodie or windbreaker ( both Domyos of Decathlon). I’ve been wearing the T-shirt, boxers and socks combo since 2014. I bought 15 pieces of each so I could go through two full weeks. I chose black because I don’t want to project any unwanted messages with a stamp or logo. It’s the maximum normcore, but I add a subtle hint of a different color to the sleeve of each shirt, so it’s great when people realize it’s not actually the same shirt every day. I always know how my outfit will look and I’m sure it will be comfortable, perfect! If I need a replacement, I know what to ask for. I also wear the same pajamas every night. ‘My look was never forced or planned, it just developed naturally’

My signature style is to wear all black with a pop of color in my glasses and minimal accessories, like my Swatch wristwatch and scarves. Black is always the new black and my look is to layer oversized T-shirts, jackets, leggings and shorts with black or colorful Birkenstocks. This has been my signature style since the beginning of the millennium; It was never forced or planned, but something that developed naturally. The main advantages are the efficiency of wearing the same thing every day, but also the confidence that this look gives me. Costas Mantzalos, artist and academic, Cyprus

For work, I wear a white button-down shirt, a black cardigan, and black or gray pants. For casual, I wear it with jeans. I started doing this about 10 years ago. It’s simple, flattering, and looks professional. I am financially conservative and it saves me money if I only need a pair of black shoes and a pair of silver hoops as accessories. I’m also very bad at figuring out what looks good together, and the idea of putting together “outfits” stresses me out. Katie Tice, Accounting Professor, Illinois

I love to wear black. My closet is full of black things, including shoes and accessories. Some days, I feel like black helps me hide. I have been wearing everything in black for years, so I know that everything I buy is an investment that I will use for a long time. I like to wear a base coat and then play around with interesting textures and shades. It makes me happy in the morning that I don’t have to worry about the color scheme. It is always a challenge to wear the same jacket in different ways during the day and when going out at night. Elena Parouti, architect, Cyprus
