Jalen Green, Rockets stun LeBron and the Lakers in overtime

Jalen Green, the Rockets’ prized rookie, had been hinting at this for weeks. More than hinting, he had put up unmistakable signs of what was possible.

Then when a shootout with the Los Angeles Lakers was on the line, the Rockets needing buckets late and in overtime, Green took over and the Rockets soared.

Green scored 13 consecutive points to end the fourth quarter and begin overtime to put Houston in front. When he drained a dagger 3-pointer with one minute left, he had a career-high 32 points and the Rockets closed out a 139-130 stunner against the Lakers on Wednesday night at Toyota Center.

3-POINTERS: Takeaways from Rockets’ win over Lakers

By overtime, in a game in which the Lakers (28-37) had relied on 3-point shooting, KJ Martin, Eric Gordon and Alperen Sengun each dropped in 3s. Sengun, who started with Christian Wood out, had 21 points to go with a career-high 15 rebounds. Martin, who started with Jae’Sean Tate out, had 17 points with 11 rebounds. Kevin Porter Jr. came within two rebounds of a triple double.

That was enough to overcome LeBron James’ triple-double (23 points, 14 rebounds, season-high 12 assists) and the 30 points the Lakers got from ex-Rocket Russell Westbrook.

In the end, however, the game belonged to Green, who scored 19 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Before he took off, in a twist that few might have seen coming, the Rockets (17-49) saw a win waiting for them, a stunner within reach, and decided to get it. They would have to go through James to do so.

Sengun backed down James in the low post and tried to finish over him. James blocked his shot.

Green got a step on Westbrook and went to the rim. James blocked his shot with 32.1 seconds left.

With the game tied, however, the Rockets got the stops to send the game to overtime, first when James missed a 7-footer and then when Carmelo Anthony missed a long jumper at the buzzer.
