The journalist Abraham Mendoza was assassinated this Monday in Morelia, Michoacán. The State Attorney General’s Office has detailed that there are three suspects arrested for shooting at the radio host when he was leaving the gym this afternoon. Mendoza had a radio space on the EXA 91.5 station and worked for the Artists Rights Foundation art dissemination organization. So far this year, they have assassinated six communication professionals in Mexico.

At 1:50 p.m. this afternoon, Mendoza was leaving the gym. In the parking lot of the facilities, on Madero Poniente avenue, in front of number 1581, some individuals opened fire and escaped by car. The authorities have detailed that they found three suspects of participating in the homicide on the La Huerta road, less than three kilometers from the scene. The detainees had firearms in their possession and were placed at the disposal of the Specialized Unit for the Investigation of Painful Homicide. The State Attorney General’s Office has started an investigation folder to clarify what happened.

Social networks have been filled with condolences, tributes to the journalist and outrage at the circumstances of his death. Public figures such as former President Felipe Calderón have accused the authorities of not allocating more resources to security and the police to prevent more murders against journalists. The Governor of Michoacán has given his condolences to the family of the deceased and has recognized the trajectory of Mendoza. “In my Government, we condemn any aggression towards communicators and I trust that this unfortunate event will not go unpunished,” he wrote on his profile. Professionals from other media have denounced among prayers the continuing violence against media workers in the country.

Mendoza is the sixth journalist to be assassinated in Mexico so far in 2021 and the last public victim of the violence that reigns in Michoacán, where organized crime leaves a trail of shootings, blocked roads and captive residents. A month ago, two Mexican journalists were killed within 24 hours. Like the Morelia radio host, the police reporter Gustavo Sánchez was shot in Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. 700 kilometers from there, in the municipality of Metepec, in the State of Mexico, the body of journalist Enrique García was found aboard his vehicle at midnight. The crimes of Sánchez and García add to the black list that has made Mexico the most dangerous country in the world for the press.
