Liga MX 2021 Apertura: updated results, classification in the race for the playoffs places of the league in Mexican soccer

A total of 18 clubs start the Liga MX 2021 Apertura season with the dream of lifting the league trophy in December. But first, you need to get to the postseason: To do that, teams must finish in the top 12 in the standings to advance to the postseason, or the league, as it is popularly known.

There will be a lot of position dribbling during the 17-game regular season. That’s because finishing in the top four of the standings gives the team an automatic spot in the quarterfinals. Teams that finish from No. 5 to No. 12 have to survive a single elimination game to reach the quarterfinals.

The regular season standings also come into play during the playoff quarterfinal and semifinal series, which are played over two games. The team with the most goals scored in both games advances. But if the teams are tied for goals scored at the end of that second leg, the club that finished highest in the regular season standings will advance. That rule disappears for the final, where teams will head to extra time and penalty shootouts, if necessary.

Liga MX 2021 Apertura Standings

The classification is based on the points that the teams accumulate during the 17 games of the regular season: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. If teams are tied on points, the following tiebreakers are used in this specific order:

1. Higher goal difference
2. More goals scored
3. More goals scored away from home
4. Head-to-head duels between tied teams
5. Best “quotient” rankings (points per game for the previous six seasons)
6. Fair Play Classification (based on yellow and red cards received)
7. Random draw

With those tiebreaks in mind, here’s what the updated table looks like:
