Limited to 120 km / h whether you like it or not: this is how the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA) mandatory this year works

The speed limiter It is a reality that has come to stay. It is not something that we say, it is a decision promoted by the European Union to reduce road accidents and that will put the driver on notice when he is exceeding the maximum speed allowed.

The obligation to have the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA, for its acronym in English) is one more within the package of novelties that all new cars that are registered from July 6, 2022 will have. It is one more of the new ADAS driving assistance and safety systems that will be implemented starting this year.

The changes that come

From July 6, 2022all cars that are homologated must have the following eight safety systems as standard:

  • Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA).
  • Fatigue and sleepiness detector.
  • Emergency braking.
  • Rear camera with cross traffic alert.
  • Lane change warning.
  • Seat belt use alert in the rear seats.
  • black box
  • Integrated breathalyzer.

All these innovations, in addition, will become mandatory in all new cars sold from July 6, 2024, regardless of when they were homologated. These obligations are part of the Vision Zero project that the European Commission has underway.

The objective is to eliminate the accident victims of traffic with an ambitious plan that will also have two other phases that will take place from 2024 and 2026, although with minor changes and not as intrusive in driver behavior as those mentioned here. In other articles we have already told you how breathalyzers will be integrated into cars or black boxes. This time we pay attention to the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA).

This is how the Intelligent Speed Assistant will work

The Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA) is one of the most controversial decisions that have been made with the approval of this new package of measures and decisions. With him, the car will monitor the speed to which it circulates and will try to put limits on speeding.

Although speed assistants are already included in a good part of the new vehicles that are put on the market, not all of them have the same features or work the same. In the market we can find the speeding alert, the speed limiter, the cruise control or the adaptive cruise control, all with their own peculiarities.

If we focus on the Intelligent Speed Assistant, this new system will study the speed of the vehicle by crossing the GPS data with the reader of signal recognition of the car itself. Thus, it will act as quickly as possible and alert the driver as soon as possible to a possible speeding.

Smart Speed Assistant

That is, it is not an adaptive cruise control. The driver will have control of the accelerator at any time but, if the vehicle detects that the speed at which it is traveling is being exceeded, it sends an audible and visual signal to the driver. In the event that he does not lift his foot, it is contemplated that the car can be more intrusive, with haptic signals on the throttle (making it vibrate, for example) or even hardening the pedal to prevent the driver from accelerating further.

In spite of everything, the driver will always have control of the vehicle and, as is already the case with the current limiters or cruise controls, it will be possible to exceed the speed limit by sinking the foot on the accelerator and overcoming the barrier set up by the car. In addition, the system can be deactivated diving into the vehicle menus, but we must bear in mind that, by default, it will always be activated when we restart the car.

fighting speed

In Spain, we usually have the DGT in mind as the main organization fighting against the maximum speed limits allowed. The body has lowered the maximum limits allowed on secondary roads to 90 km/h and you can no longer count on the margin of 20 km/h to overtake.

These are decisions that the DGT defends by ensuring that speeding was present in 2019 in 23% of accidents with fatalities, although distractions, such as the use of mobile phones, are already the most common cause of accidents in our country.

At night all pedestrians are gray: the crash prevention system fails when it is most needed

From the European Union they ensure that the combination of intelligent speed assistant and lane keeping system can save 7,300 lives and prevent 38,900 serious injuries by 2030. In fact, they point out that speeding is a key factor in 30% of accidents with fatal victims in the Old Continent.

Although the European and Spanish institutional campaigns to reduce speed are continuous (it is also encouraged to limit the speed in cities to 30 km/h as has already happened in the vast majority of streets in our country), the manufacturers themselves are making decisions to limit speed, like Volvo, and they have found in the autonomy of electric cars one more reason for it.
