Lugansk, Donetsk and Kherson will hold a referendum on joining Russia

The authorities of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk and the pro-Russian administration of the Kherson region announced this Tuesday that the referendum on the possible accession of the territory to Russia will be held between September 23 and 27one day after the parliaments of the pro-Russian authorities installed in these regions approved taking this step.

The announcement was made by the speaker of the Lugansk parliament, Denis Miroshnichenko, hours after the members of the Public Chamber unanimously approved a law on the celebration of referendum on this point, as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax.

Shortly after, hehe Donetsk Public Chamber has confirmed that the vote in this territory will take place on the same dates, as reported by the Russian news agency TASS. The Government of Ukraine has not commented for now, although in the past it has rejected the validity of these votes.

The parliaments of the self-proclaimed republics of Lugansk and Donetsk approved motions on Monday calling for the holding of referendums for the adherence of the two breakaway Ukrainian regions to Russia, that on February 24 launched a war against Ukraine after recognizing the independence of these regions.

For its part, the civic council installed by the pro-Russian authorities in the Kherson region (south) presented this Tuesday an initiative to hold a referendum on the annexation of this territory to Russia. Thus, he has shown his confidence that the initiative will be supported by the population and that the union with Russia “will guarantee security in the territory of the region.”

The pro-Russian authorities of Kherson, bordering the Crimean peninsula, announced in early September the temporary cessation of the accession process to Russia, arguing security reasons, within the framework of the counteroffensive launched by the Ukrainian troops in this area of ​​the European country.
