The 28-year-old man who allegedly attacked his 23-year-old partner with a knife in Don Benito last Saturday morning, has spent his first night in jail and is charged with attempted murder. The alleged perpetrator of the events has been in the Badajoz prison since yesterday, Monday, after giving a statement before the judge, who ordered his entry into pre-trial detention and without bail.

The arrested person gave a statement on the same Monday in the Court of Instruction and First Instance number 1 of this same town, which is the one that deals with cases of gender-based violence in this judicial district, after both were treated at the Don Benito Hospital -Villanueva, since the alleged perpetrator of the events injured himself with the same knife with which he would have stabbed the victim 25 times. He has been in police custody at all times.

As confirmed by judicial sources, the alleged aggressor has no history of cases of gender violence. In order to protect the victim, the court has also issued a restraining order for the aggressor prohibiting him from communicating with her by any means.

According to these same sources, there is also no evidence that the victim has filed a complaint about the facts, at least in court, but once she has given a statement and the alleged aggressor has been ordered to enter prison, this procedure is not necessary to continue. with the case in court.

The events occurred around 5 in the morning last Saturday in the area of ​​Plaza de Guadalupe de Don Benito, known as San Marcos, where the National Police went, which since then has been investigating it as an alleged case of gender-based violence.

It should be remembered that the couple have a minor daughter together.

According to the first investigations, the man attacked the woman and later self-harmed with the same knife. As a consequence, the young woman has suffered injuries to her face, hands and chest. The alleged assailant allegedly self-harmed, inflicting stab wounds on his chest that caused a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). The two were transferred to the Don Benito-Villanueva hospital where they received medical assistance. On Monday they were discharged.

Remember that 016 is the helpline for victims of gender-based violence, it is free and leaves no trace on the bill. The scourge of gender violence means that 1,003 women from Extremadura have to experience some type of police protection. If at the end of 2021 the region maintained a total of 1,720 active cases, as of March 31 the number had increased by 12 more to 1,732, of which 23 affect minors. Specifically, 1,039 in the province of Badajoz and 723 in Cáceres.

Last year, 16 percent more cases of gender-based violence were registered in Extremadura, with more than 2,500 complaints.
