Marcelo Pecci, the renowned prosecutor who imprisoned Ronaldinho and who has been murdered on his honeymoon

The Paraguayan prosecutor Marcelo Pecci has been assassinated this Tuesday by some gunmen who boarded on jet skis the place where the jurist spent his honeymoon, on the Barú island in the Colombian Caribbean. Pecci, 45, was specialized in the fight against organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering and the financing of terrorist groups. Also, he was famous for having ex-soccer player sent to prison Ronaldinho between March and August 2020.

This prosecutor was one of the most relevant and recognized jurists in his country. After graduating in the late 1990s, he began his career at the Public Ministry (Paraguay’s Attorney General’s Office) since 2000, and in 2009 he became a prosecutor.

One of the first cases for which Pecci became known and which defined his profile as a specialist in drug trafficking cases was the operative ‘A Ultranza Py’whose mission was to pursue a large structure that transported cocaine from Bolivia to Paraguay, which was then sent to areas of Europe and Africa.

This research achieved capture of several members of a mafia related to drug trafficking and money laundering, which could have made Pecci’s name appear on the list of enemies of these groups.

However, the case for which Pecci was best known was the one involving the Brazilian former soccer player Ronaldinho after he tried to enter Paraguay with a forged passport. Both the athlete and his brother were sent to prison in March 2020.

This prosecutor also covered other media cases, which made him constantly in the public eye, such as the case of the assassination of the daughter of the governor of Amambaythe 22-year-old Kaline Reionoso de Oliveira.

In addition, Pecci investigated the family of politicians and businessmen Sánchez Garcete for crimes of money laundering. The former deputy of the Colorado Party Carlos Rúben Sánchez Garcete, alias Chicharõ, who was murdered last August, belonged to this clan. Both he and several of his relatives were investigated for crimes related to money laundering, criminal association and drug trafficking.

“Two men attacked Marcelo. They came in a small boat, or a jet sky, the truth is I did not see it well », explained his widow, the journalist Claudia Aguilera, to the newspaper ‘El Tiempo’. In the last publication of the communicator on Instagram, the couple is seen embracing on the beach and, in the foreground, some baby shoes. Paraguay’s attorney general, a personal friend of Pecci, told W Radio that Aguilera is pregnant.

Police offer half a million dollars to anyone who offers information to capture the killers

The director of the Colombian police, General Jorge Luis Vargas, assured at a press conference that the US anti-drug agency DEA, Colombian and Paraguayan authorities are working to “obtain as much information” about the crime. “We will organize a international search and location team for these criminals wherever they are,” added the officer.

According to AFP, the police have announced a reward equivalent to about $488,000 for information leading to the capture of the killers. Helicopters, divers, experts, fingerprint experts and specialized prosecutors are part of the investigative body in charge of the case.
