Holidays shown are the NYSE and Nasdaq calendar. Every other exchange keeps its own — Tokyo alone closes for around twenty days a year, and Hong Kong and Shanghai both close for Lunar New Year. The status above does not know about non-US holidays, so a card can read open on a local public holiday.
How to read the trading day
There is no single market clock. Trading moves west around the world in a relay: Sydney and Tokyo open while New York sleeps, the Asian session hands to London, and London runs alongside New York for the last two hours of its day. The handovers matter more than the individual hours, because that is where volume, spreads and the price you actually get are decided.
The overlaps are the liquid hours
London and New York overlap for roughly two hours — 09:30 to 11:30 Eastern, 14:30 to 16:30 in London. Both of the world's deepest equity and currency pools are open at once, and it shows: the tightest spreads of the day in large caps, in index futures and in EUR/USD and GBP/USD sit inside that window. Tokyo and Hong Kong overlap almost entirely, and Hong Kong and London share the hour from 08:00 to 09:00 London time, which is why Asian news so often prices into European stocks before the European open.
The thinnest hour of the global day is the gap after New York closes and before Tokyo opens — around 20:00 to 22:30 Eastern. Anything that trades then, including after-hours US stock and crypto, moves on very little volume.
Pre-market and after-hours are not the same market
US exchanges accept orders from 04:00 and until 20:00 Eastern, but those sessions run on a fraction of regular-hours volume, with wider spreads, no closing auction and far fewer participants. A stock quoted up eight per cent at 05:00 on an earnings release routinely opens up three, because the 09:30 auction is the first time the whole market prices it at once. Treat an extended-hours print as an indication, not a price.
Daylight saving breaks the arithmetic twice a year
The United States, Europe and Australia change their clocks on different dates, and much of Asia does not change at all. For about three weeks in March and again in late October, the gap between New York and London is an hour off its usual five, and between New York and Sydney it can move by two. Every time on this page is computed from your browser's own time zone database rather than a fixed offset, so those weeks are handled without your doing anything.
What this page does not do
It is a schedule, not a data feed. It does not know about unscheduled halts, circuit breakers, half-days outside the US calendar, or the auction periods that sit either side of the continuous session on most exchanges. Closing auctions in particular run a few minutes past the headline close on Euronext, Xetra, the LSE and the ASX. If you are timing an order to the minute, check with your broker, not with a web page.

Is the stock market open right now?
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq trade 09:30 to 16:00 Eastern Time, Monday to Friday, apart from ten public holidays a year. The counter at the top of this page reads your device clock against each exchange's own time zone and tells you which of the sixteen are trading at this moment, with a countdown to the next open or close.
What time does the NYSE open in my time zone?
The opening bell is 09:30 Eastern. In summer that is 14:30 in London, 19:00 in Mumbai, 22:30 in Tokyo and 23:30 in Sydney — but each of those shifts by an hour when the countries change clocks on different dates. Which exchanges close for lunch?
Tokyo breaks 11:30 to 12:30, Hong Kong 12:00 to 13:00 and Shanghai 11:30 to 13:00, all local time. No major European or American exchange has a midday break. On this page a break shows as a gap in the bar and the card reads lunch.
What are pre-market and after-hours trading?
On US exchanges, pre-market runs 04:00 to 09:30 and after-hours 16:00 to 20:00 Eastern. Same venues, a fraction of the volume, wider spreads and no closing auction — so a price printed at 05:00 can be a long way from where the stock actually opens.
When do London and New York overlap?
From the New York open at 09:30 Eastern until London closes at 16:30 London time — about two hours. It is the busiest window of the global trading day and carries the tightest spreads in large caps and in FX.
Which markets trade on a Sunday?
Saudi Arabia's Tadawul runs Sunday to Thursday, so it is the one major equity market open on a Sunday. Crypto trades continuously, all year. Foreign exchange runs from Sunday 17:00 Eastern to Friday 17:00 Eastern, which is why a currency pair can gap over a weekend while the stocks priced in it cannot.
