Maxey leads 76ers to beat Grizzlies 122-119 in overtime without Embiid

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Tyrese Maxey had 33 points, including a layup with 26.4 seconds remaining in overtime, that put Philadelphia ahead for good, and the 76ers beat the Memphis Grizzlies 122-119 on Monday without Joel Embiid.

Tobias Harris added 31 points and Andre Drummond had 16 points and 23 rebounds for Philadelphia, which won its fifth straight and 15th in last 18. The 76ers improved to 4-8 without Embiid, who sat out on rest.

“Just great efforts from everyone,” Harris said. “We wanted this one.”

Ja Morant scored 37 points and Desmond Bane had a career-high 34 for Memphis.

“I love big games,” Bane said. “They played well. We played well and we fought. As long as we fight and play together, I will live with the result every night.”

Neither team led by more than four in a thrilling back-and-forth fourth quarter and overtime.

Maxey’s driving layup put Philadelphia ahead 120-119. The 76ers packed the lane as Morant tried to reclaim the lead with a drive on the ensuing possession, and the Memphis star passed it to Ziaire Williams, whose 3-pointer from the corner went wide. Matisse Thybulle grabbed the rebound and passed Maxey, who finished off the scoring with a layup.

“I’m happy he’s my point guard,” Drummond said.
