Team USA had an unusually bumpy road to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, but made it to the last group of eight. Of course, eight of the 12 teams in the tournament advance to the quarterfinals, so it would have been a huge surprise if the USA team hadn’t been able to get there.
Now, the United States prepares to make an effort as they try to win their fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
In first place for the US team will be Spain. The reigning 2019 FIBA World Cup champions will be a tough test for the United States, as they have four current NBA players on their roster and many former players, including Pau Gasol. Team USA has a 12-0 record against Spain during the Olympics, but the USA just won by an average of just eight points per game.
Elsewhere, Australia will seek a medal for the first time in the country’s Olympic basketball history. They will face Argentina, who will be riding 41-year-old Luis Scola and Facundo Campazzo. Scola and Co. will seek to win Argentina’s second gold medal. The country’s first came back in 2004, the last year Team USA failed to win gold.
The other half of the table will feature France and Slovenia, two of the three teams that were undefeated in the standings (Australia was third). Slovenia, making their first Olympic appearance, hopes to overtake Luka Doncic against Germany, who were the last team to qualify for all eight teams. France will play Italy in what appears to be a low-scoring match. France has allowed 71.7 points per game, the tournament low, while Italy’s 79.7 ranks third in the Olympics so far.
Here is the full remaining schedule for the 2021 Olympic men’s basketball tournament.
