Good Friday was the peak day with more than three thousand queries at the Tourist Office, a figure never seen before

Mérida today puts data on the tourist crowd that has been seen during Holy Week. Pilar Amor, the Tourism delegate, makes a very positive assessment. “We are very satisfied because we have verified that Holy Week generates wealth and economy in the city.”

The parameters of this 2022 are very close to those of 2019, the last one before the health crisis and which also left a record number of visitors and overnight stays in Mérida. Historic was 2019 for the city’s tourism sector. During Easter of that year, 30,200 visitors passed through the monuments. And the data for this year speak of more than 28,000. They hope to reach thirty thousand of the record because in many communities today is still a holiday and several large groups are expected at the monuments. Easter Monday also generates many visitors.

According to Amor, on Good Thursday and Good Friday there were 5,738 queries at the tourist office. Never before, explains the councilor, had so many people passed through the Tourist Office on Good Thursday and Good Friday. On Friday, the record for consultations in a single day in Mérida was also broken with 3,295.

To all this data we must add the consultations on the municipal tourist information website, which has moved every day by the thousand users. There is also an increase in queries due to the QR codes installed in the monuments, by sending emails or by visitors who call by phone before coming to the city to find out more.

The Merida Hotel Association has finally closed Holy Week with an average occupancy rate of 80.65%. There was a full Thursday and Good Friday. The initial forecast handled by hoteliers was 70% global and full occupancy as of Thursday. There is therefore, according to the councilor, a final result that exceeds initial expectations.

The volume of public in the city has also been noted in the deployment of the cleaning service. According to Amor, 47% more garbage was collected than a normal one.

“Holy Week, in addition to being a religious, artistic and cultural expression, is an important source of economic resources.” Amor believes that Good Friday in Mérida is becoming more and more attractive. The occupancy data and inquiries at the Tourist Office leave Friday as a peak day, coinciding with the Via Crucis at dawn in the Roman Amphitheater. He understands that the expense of the City Council in paying for the live broadcast on television for all the channels that want to give it is an investment in promotion that generates a return. He promised to promote it on an international scale in the future.
