Merida finally smiles

The club points to the arrival of Juanma and the almost total availability of the squad as the cause of their best moment in years

PR MERIDA.

Last Saturday morning, in the last unloading training session of the week, Juanma Barrero grabbed his second, Sergio Cano, and expressed his great concern: «I’m nervous. Things are going too well.” It was true: he had already directed eight matches in two stages and had not yet lost; Except for Gaspar, no one has been injured in a month and a half when until not long ago there were two per game; and the team had cut eight points from the playoff in seven days. “Everything is going so well that I get nervous… but I’ll be wrong,” he explained on Sunday after beating Don Benito in the team’s best game since his arrival on the bench. “But one day defeat will come and we will have to be prepared. What is not normal is what is happening now.

There are two reasons why Mérida is at its best, not just this season, but also in recent years: Juanma Barrero and the absence of injuries. And in the club they do not agree on prioritizing one reason before the other and vice versa. Because the squad, except for the arrivals of Ignacio Goma and Diego López in the winter market, is the same one that sank emotionally and football-wise in December. The coach’s mix and everyone’s availability is the explanation for the team’s growth in the last two months.

Because having more troops than his predecessors has pushed Juanma Barrero to be an interventionist, both in the ‘elevens’ and in the forms. Adriá Rojas has already played in goal. He has used Emilio Cubo and Felipe Alfonso at right back. The same on the left with Héctor Camps and Álvaro Ramón. Mario Robles, Goma and Artiles have rotated in the midfield. Lolo Pla, Higor Rocha and Aitor Pons have done it upstairs. And Diego López, Carmelo Merenciano and Guille Perero have been occupying the bands. «I give them confidence, some touch-ups, but the boys train well. There is pineapple: they know that one day they play some and another day, the others. The fans are surprised by those things about the lineup, but it is meditated and studied ».

The sweet moment of the team has once again summoned the public to the stands. Before the Don Benito, for example, the Romano registered the best entrance of the course: 2,670 spectators. A number well above the visit of the Cacereño or the Messenger, the best to date. «I am proud that people come, have fun, feel identified and leave the stadium happy. This field had to be scary and that the visiting team felt that it was squeezing. And the boys are responding.”

Now comes the stretch of the three canaries: Tamaraceite and Mensajero on the islands and San Fernando at home. “But step by step. Let’s not throw the bells on the fly. Feet on the ground and go with this momentum, intensity and way of competing to the next commitments », stops Juanma, who for Sunday recovers Nacho González but loses Diego López due to accumulation of yellow cards. Gaspar remains in doubt.
