Premier League title race: Man City maintain slender lead

The Premier League continues on Saturday and former England striker Michael Owen has given his predictions for the upcoming fixtures – starting with his old club Liverpool.

The Reds face a trip to Brighton, who’ve lost four consecutive league games to slip into the bottom half of the table.

Liverpool, meanwhile, haven’t suffered a domestic defeat in 2022 and have ambitions of completing an unprecedented quadruple this season after winning the EFL Cup.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are six points behind leaders Manchester City with a game in hand – and Owen reckons they’ll keep the heat on Pep Guardiola’s champions this weekend.

“Brighton’s form really has dipped over the last month or so,” Owen told Bet Victor.

“They just aren’t scoring enough goals right now, after all only Burnley and Norwich have less all season. There’s no danger of this side going down, but Graham Potter will want to target finishing in the top 10.

“Liverpool’s last couple of games haven’t seen them quite at their best. They got the win over West Ham but did concede a few chances in that game and on another day, could have drawn.

“The [European] defeat to Inter on Tuesday was frustrating, mainly because they had more than enough chances to win that game.

“Liverpool are due a game in which they score a few goals, they are creating plenty of chances. I think that will come here. 3-1 Liverpool.”

When it comes to the race for Champions League football, Owen believes Manchester United will edge their top-four rivals Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

“The performance in the second half against City [in their last game] was nowhere near good enough, but there were some positives in the first,” said Owen.

“Jadon Sancho took his goal brilliantly and looks like he’s beginning to settle in this side.

“Spurs are such a hard side to predict under [manager Antonio] Count. I didn’t see that 5-0 win over Everton coming, but some of Spurs’ play was superb, even if Everton did make it easy for them.

“The one massive positive of late though, is Harry Kane’s form. He’s been brilliant, both in terms of scoring and creating chances.

“Kane is such a complete striker and it’s great to see him get back to his best. Man United desperately need to win this. I can’t see much in this one, but I think United will edge it. 2-1.”

At the other end of the table, Brentford welcome relegation rivals Burnley. The hosts are just six points ahead of their guests, who sit in 18th place.

Owen believes neither team will make much of a headway on Saturday afternoon, predicting a 1-1 draw at the Brentford Community Stadium.

“This one is massive,” added Owen. “Brentford’s 3-1 win over Norwich last week was vital, I would have feared for them if they lost that.

“getting [Ivan] Toney back has given this squad a big lift, and he took his three goals brilliantly. There are not many better penalty takers out there than him at the moment.

“Burnley have done well to give themselves a chance of safety, as things weren’t looking good a month ago. Recent results haven’t been as good, so they’ll be desperate to get something here.

“I can’t separate these two. Both will be desperate to not lose, every point matters at this stage of the season. I’m going to go for a 1-1 draw.”
