MLB: Reds spoil Braves World Series party, Astros steal the win in LA

Atlanta Georgia – Defending World Series champions the Atlanta Braves had their MLB Opening Day celebration spoiled on their own field by the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night.

The Reds beat the Braves 6-3 on baseball’s first day of the regular season after much fanfare in Atlanta to celebrate the Braves’ world championship.

In front of a packed house of Atlanta’s most faithful fans, the Reds got right to work as they slowly picked away at the Braves’ pitching attack with six hits in the second through fourth innings, resulting in an early 3-0 lead.

The Braves finally got on the board in the bottom of the third, thanks to a throwing error at third base, killing any chances of a shutout.

After that, the game stayed quiet for the next couple of innings until the Reds got hot again in the top of the sixth, blowing the game open with a three-run homer by third baseman Brandon Drury (29), his second hit of the night.

Atlanta added a couple more runs in the eighth thanks to a two-run blast but there was nothing left in the tank and they start their season with a loss.

Reds starting pitcher Tyler Mahle got the win with five innings pitched with seven strikeouts while Max Fried was given the loss after 5 2/3 innings and five runs earned.

Both teams are back at it down in Atlanta on Friday night.

Houston is looking to make up for coming up short in last year’s World Series to the Braves and this gritty win was a little proof that they could go far this season.

The first two innings saw a little activity, a few hits between both sides but no one got a run on the board until the top of the third, when a single brought home the game’s first run in favor of the Astros.

Houston threatened again in the fifth but was kept off the board while Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani was keeping his team in the game with his pitching arm.

Ohtani was taken out in the sixth inning but the Astros couldn’t capitalize on his absence until eighth, when both Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez hit solo home runs that put Houston up by three.

And in the bottom half, Los Angeles tried to mount a comeback with a run but it was all they could muster as their chances ran out by the night’s end.

Astros pitcher Framber Valdez got the win after throwing 6 and ⅔ innings and striking out six batters while Ohtani was handed the season despite striking out nine and only allowing one run.

The Astros and Angels are back on Friday night for the second of four games in their opening series.
