The Chanfaina Festival of Fuente de Cantos has registered a total of 117 clubs that will participate next Sunday in the Festival of Regional Tourist Interest. The groups seek to win the ‘Machacaó de Plata’ and have the senior chef among their ranks.
Two years later, the ‘Chanfaina’ returns in its 51st edition. In 2021 the 50 years were celebrated and, despite the pandemic, they did not give up on carrying out activities in their commemoration, many of them virtual.
On this occasion, the City Council has prepared an extensive program. The events begin this Friday, April 22, when the inauguration of the 21st Multisectoral Business and Associations Fair will take place. It will be at 1:30 p.m. and will be attended by Francisco Mendoza, Government sub-delegate in Badajoz.
On Saturday, at 9:00, the Dehesa Nueva hosts the 24th Greyhound Race, organized by the Asociación Galguera Perdigonera and, at 12:00, the ‘III Eliminator Infantil’, carried out by the Fuentecanto Bike Club. The test, although it will take place in the Parque de la Pata, will start on Calle Ancha. There will be gifts for all participants.
At 1:00 p.m. the 8th National Iberico Ham Cutters Contest of Extremadura is held in the multipurpose lounge bar. The event will be broadcast live.
There will be different stands, with a schedule that goes from 1:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday; from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Sunday is the big day, the day of the Chanfaina. The program begins at 8:00, when the clubs will be able to go and collect the firewood, as well as the apron, beer and wine donated by the commercial houses. This withdrawal will take place in the multipurpose room of the fairgrounds. Vehicles will not be allowed to enter the premises.
Already at 10.30, the jury will go through the rocks to score the presentations.
The president of the jury will be Ana Belén González Pinos, gastronomic consultant and trainer, specialist in artisan cheeses and sherry wines; international cheese tasting judge and director of the gastronomy department and committee of experts of the International Association of Protected Gastronomic Heritage.
Shearing and tasting
Half an hour later, a sample of traditional scissors shearing, to continue with the offering of the lamb next to the multipurpose room. At noon the 51st Chanfaina Contest will begin and the performance of the folkloric group ‘La Encina’, from Olivenza.
Between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., the chanfaina tasting takes place in the bar of the multipurpose room, at a cost of 2 euros per dish.
The time for making chanfainas will end at 1:45 p.m. and three hours later, around 4:30 p.m., the different prizes will be awarded.
Both on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 2:00 p.m., there will be a tasting of lamb from Extremadura IGP Corderex roasted on oak charcoal.
