(CNN) — An “active shooting incident” erupted at a mall near Milwaukee on Friday, leaving several people injured, Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride said.
“Multiple injured victims have been and are being transported from the north end of Macy’s department store,” McBride told CNN. “None of the injuries to the victims appear to be fatal,” he added.
The mayor said “the perpetrator is on the loose at this time” and about 75 police officers were on the scene in the Mayfair Mall a week before the start of the holiday season.
“It will take time to provide additional, and perhaps more accurate information,” McBride said.
The FBI in Milwaukee tweeted that agents were “currently responding to support the tactical response of local security forces to the Mayfair Mall shooting incident.”
In response there is a strong presence of police and emergency medical technicians, based on images from CNN affiliate WISN.
Police officers in tactical gear were seen entering the mall. And at least five people were carried on stretchers to ambulances, WISN reported.
Situation inside the mall near Milwaukee during the shooting
Austin Seybold, 24, said he was locked in the back room of the Finish Line store inside the mall. Seybold saw customers running past the store. Employees began gathering people inside the store. Then “they were taken to the back and locked the front door,” Seybold wrote. The young man contacted CNN via text message from the store.
Seybold said six employees and a dozen customers were locked in the back room for about two hours. Then a SWAT team escorted them out.
“It was a bit hectic at first, but we managed to get everyone to the back without a problem and everyone has been pretty quiet, which is good, although we can hear what sounds like SWAT teams in the back aisles of the mall and the gravity of the situation is beginning to be felt, “he wrote.
Wauwatosa is about seven miles northwest of Milwaukee.
The city was the scene of multiple protests in October Following the news that Agent Joseph Mensah, who shot and killed 17-year-old Alvin Cole outside the Mayfair Mall in February, would not face criminal charges.
The decision not to charge Mensah sparked protests during a month-long wave of nationwide demonstrations over the police’s treatment of black people.
