Multiple train cars fall into water after derailment in Harmar


Several injuries were reported after a train derailed Thursday in Harmar, Allegheny County. The derailment happened in the 2400 block of Freeport Road, near the Allegheny Valley Joint Sewage Authority treatment plant.Freeport Road is closed in both directions between Hulton Bridge and Guys Run Road due to the crash. Traffic along Freeport Road is being detoured via Powers Run Road/Fox Chapel Road and Guys Run Road. In all, 17 cars derailed in the incident. Several train cars have gone into a tributary to the Allegheny River. Allegheny County Emergency Management say the liquid being carried by the tankers has been contained.According to an official, a heavy construction vehicle was crossing the tracks when it and the train collided. The driver of that construction vehicle has been taken to a hospital. The two operators of the train have also been transported from the scene. The severity of the injuries is unclear at this time. At this time, our personnel are on-site and working with local authorities to determine next steps.”A railroad bridge was also taken out in the derailment. SKY 4 video shows that some sort of liquid is leaking from the train. A viewer who sent pictures to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 said he heard the derailment happen and said it appears some sort of pipe was broken in the incident causing liquid to spill into the waterway.
