Muslim community reacts to arrest of man connected to Muslim men murders


MANY FAITHS CAME TOGETHER TO HONOR THE VICTIMS. THEY JUST WRAPPED UP PRAYER HERE AT THE MOSQUE. LOTS OF MIXED REACTION FROM THE COMMUNITY. SOME SAY IT’S A BIG SIGH OF RELIEF. OTHERS LEFT IN SHOCK WITH THE STRING OF MUSLIM KILLINGS IN ALBUQUERQUE OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS. MANY MUSLIMS HAVE BEEN LEFT ON EDGE. BUT TUESDAY’S ANNOUNCEMENT OF AN ARREST, THIS CAME AS A SURPRISE IS LEAVING SOME MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY TO BE A QURESHI AND A LOSS FOR WORDS. IT IS VERY SAD TO SEE THAT THIS HAPPENED WITHIN. WE WERE ALSO CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR FAMILIES, OF THE COMMUNITY, OF THE CHILDREN. WE DIDN’T KNOW WHICH WAY TO LOOK. AND WHEN THIS HAPPENED, IT REALLY TOOK US BY SURPRISE. OTHERS SAY THEY’RE GRATEFUL THE SUSPECT HAS BEEN CAUGHT, BUT THERE’S STILL SOME CAUSE OF CONCERN. THEY’RE NOT FEELING RELIEVED YET. I WOULD HOPEFULLY, HOPEFULLY AT I MEAN, WE DON’T HAVE ANYONE WALKING AROUND COMMITTING CRIMES OF THIS MAGNITUDE. WHILE SOME MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY DO NOT KNOW THE VICTIMS PERSONALLY, THEY STILL GATHER TOGETHER FOR SUPPORT. Mixed emotions from Muslim community

Dozens gathered at the Islamic Center of New Mexico to pay their respects to the Muslim victims—after an announcement was made on Tuesday’s arrest. According to Albuquerque police, Muhammad Syed, 51, is in custody following the recent murders of Muslim men in New Mexico. Sabhia Quraishi. a member of the Shura Council at the Islamic Center of New Mexico, said the news came as a shock. “This came as a surprise. It is very sad to see this happen within. We were all so concerned for the safety of our families of the community, of the children,” she said. “We didn’t know which way to look, and when this happened, it really took us by surprise.”While others believe Muhammad Syed’s arrest is a step in the right direction—Mohammad Yousef, University of New Mexico’s assistant professor, said there’s still some cause for concern. “We’re not feeling relieved 100%. Hopefully, we don’t have anyone walking around committing crimes of this magnitude,” he said. APD Chief Harold Medina said detectives will continue to work with the District Attorney’s office on potential charges for the other two homicides– the Aug. 5, 2022, murder of Naeem Hussain, and the Nov. 7, 2021, murder of Mohammad Zaher Ahmadi.
