Antony and Ruth Fort met in May 2008 and were married on New Year’s Eve 2010. She is a social worker and he is a 61-year-old microbiologist. Taking advantage of her employment as a social worker, Ruth stole just over $9,800 (the equivalent of £7,200) from a woman in a wheelchair whom he cared for in a nursing home. With that money he went on vacation to Mexico with his family.
Antony discovered the full crime when he heard what Ruth was saying in her sleep and when he found the old woman’s debit card in his wife’s purse. Without hesitation, the microbiologist went to the police to file a complaint against his wife. The woman appeared a few days ago before the Court of the Crown of Liverpool, in Great Britain.
“I was suspicious when Ruth started overspending. At first it was more of an instinct. But when I found the debit card in her bag, I knew,” Antony told the British newspaper. The Mirror. “I loved Ruth deeply, but I couldn’t ignore what she had done. It was abhorrent to me that she could steal from a vulnerable person and I had to report her,” the man said.
Antony also told authorities that one night in August 2018, when picking Ruth up from work, she told him that had taken one of the elderly residents who was in a wheelchair shopping, and she had £98,000 (about $133,000 dollars) in his bank account. At that moment the man began to worry, as he deduced that his wife had access to the card and the PIN number.
Months later, in November, came the family vacation. “Ruth booked a lot of trips over the holidays. I was spending a lot. When I questioned her, she stated that her relatives had given her a thousand pounds for expenses. I wasn’t sure I believed him,” Antony told the publication. In December the event occurred that cleared the man’s doubts.
“Everything fell into place and I felt absolutely disgusted. I could not believe it. When Ruth woke up, I confronted her and she admitted everything. I told him to pack his bags and go. It was heartbreaking, I loved her, and yet I knew I had no choice but to report her.” Ruth was arrested shortly after and is facing a sentence of home prison, after failing to attend two drug rehab sessions and one with her probation officer. If he breaks the court’s orders again or commits another crime, he will go to prison.
